Default Full Size Spare Tire Rot?

I like many members here went with a full size spare change-out several years ago. My spare is now 5 1/2 years old.
Some tire manufacturers recommend changing out the spare tires after 6 years due to age and dry rot issues. I haven't checked the date stamp on my tire yet.

Has anyone done this yet or considering this?

The other question is when was the last time you checked the tire pressure on your spare......

Why let a full size spare potentially rot away and never get any use out of it?
I run a 5 tire rotation program on all vehcles I've owned that are the designated road/tow warriors. That elimiates the problem of never seeing the spare and I get some payabck in overall tread life for the cost of the full size spare (and matched wheel if needed). At the end of that cycle I decide put 4 new on and keep an oldie as a spare or 5 new...generally if I plan to trade it off before the second set go I go back to the 4 new tire sequence.

City commuters gets the 4 tire rotation and a donut pressure check at least at each rotation to ensure the 60 p.s.i. level.

YMMV

My full size spare is actually one of the original tires from my 05. So I guess it's over 5 years old now. Since you've brought this to my attention, I will replace the spare when I replace my current set of 4. I don't drive tires down to the wear bars, so I'm okay with just putting the best one on the full size spare. That will keep my cost down to $20 or so and keeps my spare from being super old.

Thanks.

I also have an OEM Goodyear as a spare. I always intended to replace it with one of the current tires, whenever I buy my next set. Problem is, they're Goodyear TripleTreds, which are directional. So it would only be good for one side of the car.

Now, let me see - on which side of the car will I get my next flat?

The FS spare I bought had a brand new GY integrity on it.

At least is bi directional...

That’s why some times you see people standing next to there cars on the side of the road with a flat tire scratching there asses.

Simple Maintenance and safety tip

Ever time I do my own oil change, I do a visual inspection of the whole under carriage , that includes the spare tire plus the air pressure too.
That's the reason why I have it stored facing down, for easy access to the valve stem

If you mostly drive in the left lane, have it mounted for the left side. If you drive in the right lane, mount it on the right side. I know that's not very scientific and you still have a 50% chance of being wrong, but even then I wouldn't worry about running it backwards for awhile. It's still better than using the donut

It'll fit
The plate fits through the rim, just tip the plate on-end and feed it through the rims center hub then the cable.
