I have an 06 Pilot which I am going to replace the tires on soon. The shop charges an extra $15 per tire for a TPMS rebuild kit. Just wondering what anyone's thoughts are regarding if this is needed.

The valve stems and all their parts should be replaced when the tires are changed. They cannot be reused.

The TPMS sensor can often be reused. Sealing components should be replaced.

$15 is stupid money. Negotiate or go elsehwhere
Firestone charged $15 to replace the seals on all four. Quote:

My installer charged me $20 for TPMS service for all 4 with tire installation. To be honest I don't think they even did anything with TPMS. My guess they just charge you TPMS service if your vehicle has TPMS. Perhaps your installer just want to reap you off. |

I reminds me of the $2/tire charge to replace the valve stems before TPMS. Everyone replaced the valve stems, even though they were designed to last virtually forever. It was a great profit center for the tire centers, however. $8 extra per car, pure profit.
It's interesting to note that the TPMS 'kit' does not include new sensors or sensor batteries, just some 'O' rings, and a valve cap. The sensor body, itself, remains untouched. P. T. Barnum would be proud. My question: If the TPMS stems need a new 'kit' at every tire change, why doesn't the maintenance schedule mention it? Does anyone else smell something foul? |

The local Goodyear store wanted $20 to 'reset' the TPMS sensor when they replaced my tires for me. I looked at them like they were cracked and asked, "Why?"
The person responded that most vehicles with TPMS do not know specifically where each tire is located. The Pilot does learn this on its own; no reset is necessary. I wonder how many people are charged for this 'reset' when it is unnecessary. I also marvel at the fact that they wanted to charge $20 for something that would take less than a minute (if needed) with a basic scan tool.

The tires (General Grabber HTS) in the stock size came in and I had them installed on my 06 Pilot. The shopped wanted $7.50/tire for a TPMS rebuild kit which is basically a new inner seal, valve and cap. I had them do it. My first drive impression of the Grabbers were excellent. Very smooth and quiet. So far, I give them high marks.
