Default Chains

Hi everyone. I have a 2004 Honda Pilot EXL (4WD) equipped with 2 GY TrippleTreds in the front and 2 GY Integrity's in the rear. I'm about to do some snowboarding this season which involves significant movement through snow and possibly black ice.

Do you guys recommend chains for my Pilot? Also, do you guys suggest that I operate the VTM when moving on snow or ice? Fill me.

Regards,

-Albert

i take my pilot up to lake tahoe to go snowboarding about 20 times per season. i still have the oem integrities on and have never needed chains, even in the snowiest, iciest weather. the VTM-4 system really does a great job in providing traction. however, i would replace the 2 integrities in the rear with triple treds, to match the fronts and provide even better snow traction. the VTM-4 system is automatic, you don't need to turn it on. if you are referring to the VTM-4 LOCK button on the dash, you shouldn't need to use that either, unless you get stuck.

Sounds good. Thanks for your help. I'll try going up to big bear without chains mounted. But since this is my first time mountaineering with my pilot, im gonig to have chains, JUST IN CASE. Thanks!

I'm using this chains "just in case" so as not to spoil the trip.

My 2004 Pilot with AWD performed very well in the snow. There were times where the sniow was about 2 or 3 inches thick, but my GY Tripple Tred Tires chewed through the snow. At times I didn't even know I was driving on snow!

The only recommendation that I have is to space yourself out with the car infront of your. Breaking in the pilot isn't the greatest and the snow doesn't help out....

My 2008 with TTs were great in the Portland snow hell of the past week. My only problem was a flat caused by running over someone elses chain in the road. The pressure sensor detected the leak and I had it fixed for free at the local dealer.

spidey06, your ct's should be fine in the snow, probably even better than my old integrities. speaking of which, i went up to tahoe during the last storm and even with nearly 50k on the OEM tires, i had no problems getting through the white stuff. as Alpo714 mentioned earlier, leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead of you. the pilot is a heavy vehicle and will need that extra space in case of a panic stop in the snow.

I agree with you rlapid, I went back to the early post/threads of tires and wheels and theres alot of info on the ct's, majority of them are good post. I wonder what kind of OEM tires Honda is putting on the new pilot.

Where are you? I had the CT's on our MDX in MA. They are not confidence inspiring in New England winters. The Michelin LTX is better suited for areas that get a lot of snow. I have Fortera TT's on the Pilot and they are much better than the CT's. I also have Bridgestone Dueler Revo's on my truck which are performing better than the TT's. However, if ride comfort is more important than snow performance, then the CT's are a good choice.

I can be honest. When I do use the Navi I manipulate it while driving. I would not be happy at all if I had to put it in park, it would ruin it for me.

Is Honda the only company that lets you use the Navi while driving?

i go up to lake tahoe quite a bit myself too.
I recently got some GY TTs and they perform well. last time I was riding on some pretty bald michelin CTs and slid, which resulted in some bumper damage...lol

You could also try Honda's eStore online, you can buy all oe parts there and pick them up at your local dealer. Log in to the Owner's Link, and you'll be able to access it.

Hitches are mild steel.

Mild steel rusts.

If you want to go crazy, I would use a cold galvanizing compound covered with rust resisting paint.
