Default Pulled the trigger today on a set of General Grabber UHP

Decided to order from tirerack today (4) 245/70/16 General Grabber UHPs !!!!

Can't wait to get them now. I live in Houston and they ship from Shreveport, Louisiana... which is only 4 hours away or so....

I have researched, studied, compared, tormented over, bounced around just about every make of tire available in the 245/70 series.

I guess the catalyst for me "deciding" was the $$ and the reviews on the net. $91 + 18 shipping = $109 each and General is offering a $50 Visa gift card with 4 tire purchase. Makes 'em about $385 and I'll spend another $80 or so for mounting and balancing.

I have had General tires for about a year on my wife's Pontiac Vibe, although they are a performance, low profile tire, and I'm really happy with them after 10,000 miles. The SUV tire that I bought is seems to be fine for Pilot and Element owners at the TR ratings area.

Others that I considered were the Fuzion ( Bridgestone house brand ),Yokohama HT-S, Pirelli Scorpion, Kumho, and the Hankook tire.

I guess my last year's experience with a General Tire product prompted me to get a safe but inexpensive tire for my Pilot. I'm still at approximately 5/32" on all four Integrities, but at 53,000 miles and 4 hot, humid Texas summers, I just feel that they are approaching the end of life....

I may just stick the new ones in a closet for a few more months until I totally wear out my Integrities

I was really hoping to try on 255's, but I'm kinda straying away from sticking that wide of a tire on the smallest recommended rim width. I've learned over the years that sticking a wide tire on a skinny rim does not get much, if any, performance/visual appeal. The contact patch shrinks, the gas mileage sometimes suffers, and the tire just generally gets 'pissy' when squeezed on the narrow wheel.

I'll report back later once I get 'em mounted and a few miles on them.

Ordered new tires from Tirerack at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday and got them Thursday at 11 a.m. at my house.

To install or not install right away??.. That is the question..

All 4 OEM Integrities have 4-5/32" on the edges and 5-6/32" in the center. Although the above numbers appear fine, the tires look really "tired"

New tires are in the garage with a sheet draped over them.

Here is the new size ( 245/70 ) next to the worn OEM Gys.

I was looking at the Consumer Report Review in the below thread ( which I personally regard high) and was leaning towards Pirelli Scorpion and Dunlop Radial Rover AT.

Is the General referred by you the same as CR says?

Nah....

CR is referring to a tire only carried by sears to my knowledge. I only went with Generals because my wife's Pontiac Vibe has had a set on her car for the last year/10,000 miles. My tires are not the low profile tires that she has on her car, but we're thrilled with the overall performance and wear characteristics of her tires.

We can only hope that the same holds true for mine.

Price, safety, performance all considered... I think I'll be a happy Piloteer for many years to come riding on the Generals.

we have them. excellent for the price IMO. much more dry grip and definitely more wet grip than the OEM bridgestones we had, and quieter too. they are wearing better than the bridgestones too, which were completely gone by 30k. we got about 20k on them and fronts are maybe half gone and rears have plenty of tread left (havent been rotating...i know, bad...). i say we could probably get 45-50k out of the grabbers.

as far as mounting, we got them mounted and balanced at walmart for less than $20. for all 4.

i have the Exclaim UHP's on my accord, and for $86 per tire for low profile 18's i'm very very satisfied with how well the perform.

Hey there!! Thanks for the headsup! I was wondering if someone had these tires on their Pilot.

I appreciate the update on how yours are doing. Walmart sounds like a good place for mounting and balancing for little $.

jestmaty, since considered Pirelli Scorpion and other tires before you went General Grabber, did you find anything negative about Pirelli Scorpion or Dunlop Radial Rover AT.

Since I am in Arizona, I am not worried about ice braking etc for which these tires scored low in the CR comparison

Pirelli Scorpion appears to be a great tire.. don't know anything about the dunlop...

The Generals are strictly a non-snow/ice tire although it does carry the M + S designation?

I'm not sure when I'll get them mounted because I still have tread on the OEM GY's.

Thumbs up

Local Walmart guy said that, they would mount only those brands that are carried by Walmart...General seems to be not on the list.

Discount tire would price match the Genreal Grabber with tire rack...for 245/70's its coming to $594 - 50 Visa Gift card...$544 out of the door

He highly recommends Geolander HTS in 245/70's for Pilot...He is ready to do the Geolander for the same price of Grabber's since the Geolanders are in stock Decisions...Decisions

Bentley.... I loved, loved the Geolandar HTS, but someone here or on tirerack said they got a wa, wa, wa, wa, thumping kind of noise after about 10k miles.

They are still inexpensive and were initially my first choice because I also like the look of outlined letters on the tires. I don't usually scrub the walls of my tires too often, so the letters would have stayed nice for the life of the tire.

My General UHPs were $437- $50 gift card = $387. Firestone will mount and balance out the door for about $21 per tire. They did it recently on my Nissan 240SX. $387 for tires plus $84 mounting and balancing is +/- $471 out the door.

I've always used Discount in the past, but tirerack saves me by not charging tax.... although I do get to pay about $18 per tire for shipping

Still sitting, unmounted in my garage... the OEM Integrities still have 5-6/32" tread on em Good, but bad because it is still too early to throw 'em out..... Those suckers won't die, although quite a few people on this board seem to think I'm driving on borrowed time. They hated the Integrities with a passion and while I think they are cheap, they have safely gotten me almost 53,000 miles thus far and still going strong.

Take another look at the CR comparison.

The Pirelli Scorpion STR-A, Dunlop Radial Rover AT and the Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S all have relatively higher rolling resistance, which will cost you 1.5-2 MPG compared to any of the tires in the group with the lowest
rolling resistance.

Good point about the rolling resistance...Is there any data avaikable about General Grabber's on rolling resistance?

Geolanders, road noise after the honeymoon/10k miles, is it a common problem?

Well good for you! I'm gonna have to guess Generals since this the General UHP thread and you probably have questions on other threads regarding tires.

As far as burnouts go.... I never have been able 'cause I have AWD and the tires never will break loose! That would sure be one way to wear 'em out faster!

you're not trying hard enough

Aged GY integrities just need a wet surface; you should have absolutely no problem breaking traction then.
