Default free and legal MP3's

use:

streamripper.sourceforge.net to make mp3 files from:

shoutcast.com (hundreds of good internet radio stations)

ps: this helped fill up my CHA-S634 6 CD changer, which, buy the way, was very easy to install in my PILOT.

Default Sampling rate

Thanks, Corba. Very interesting stuff.

About six month ago, I deleted Kazaa from my computer. Not so much because I was worried about the record company gestapo coming to my door, but because I became more and more concerned about privacy and and possible intrusion.

Do you happen to know what sampling rate is generally used for audio files delivered from streaming radio sites like those found on shoutcast.com? Is it all "CD-quality" 192 kbps? Or do some stations use lower quality sampling rates? How can you tell the difference?

With Kazaa, you could "dial in" a quality rate in your search and most times the quality was what you asked for.

Any light shed on this would be appreciated. This approach would certainly allow me to continue adding new music to my digital collection.

Thanks again.

Ahhh . . . I see where shoutcast.com lists the sampling rates of the various stations.

Very cool.

on shoutcast.com, many are 128Kb/s, some are 192, some are less.

but when using streamripper, and getting a few cd's w/artist/title tags A DAY, it's worth it to have 128Kb/s.

I also burn VBR (variable bit rate) from my satellite/cable music channels, which, even tho there's an analog stage involved, sound way cool quality wise, but have no artist/title, and no file breaks.

so i end up (shoutcast.com) having about 150 128Kb/s songs per CD, and depending on the shoutcast station, i skip between 20%-50% of the songs), still yielding several hours of great tunes per CD, and find many new artists that aren't even on kazaa!!!!!!!

I'm all over this stuff, Corba. Many thanks.

BTW, are you a Pilot owner already or shopping for one?

Corba, can you walk me through how to get MP3's from shoutcast.com? I'm not computer illiterate, but I'm no expert. I'm not sure exactly what to download from streamripper, how to use streamripper with shoutcast, and then to create CD's.

Thanks for your help.

Sure.

1) install winamp3 mp3 player (winamp2 if u r on windoze95)
2) download Streamripper
3) pull up shoutcast.com and select your favorite radio station
4) in the winamp "thinger" (scroll to the far right), find SR icon, click it.
5) use streamripper options to find out what directory it's putting the gobs of mp3 files it's ripping from your shoutcast radio station.
6) use the software that came with your CD burner to burn.
Enjoy!!!!

THANKS Corba. I'm "ripping" as we speak, and I'll let you know if I was successful in transferring the files to my MP3 player and also creating CDs.

I second that!

It's cool that songs are ripped individually from streaming radio. Simply rip a couple hundred megs of MP3s at a time and keep whatever tracks you want.

Thanks again, cobra.
