Seems to be coming my way
I'm not prepared, although I live about 65-70 miles away from Galveston, Tx. Got a bunch of water stored in the Pilot, flashlights and batteries, and dry/canned food. I guess I have to pick up all the crap from the yard and put it away. lest they become missiles. Will hitch up my boat and follow the wife in her car to Austin, Tx on Friday. She has family over there. I know that her sister's house is 180 miles away. I will not forget my unopened bottle of Patron tequilla and my suitcase of Miller Lite. Oh, BTW I was born in New Orleans 40 years ago. Wish us all luck...... |

Take everything that matters with you. Video tape everything you leave behind for insurance documentary purposes. Buy a few five gallon containers and fill them with gas Where ever you are going so are up to a million others all needing gas.

Yup, I hear the people in Houston are pretty worried. I don't imagine anything will do the same kind of damage that Katrina did. At least, I hope not

During the last four storms that have hit us I have learned something from each storm that I should have done but didn't. Trial and error I guess. Invest in an AC adapter for your car lighter. I can't tell you how many time we used it to charge up cell phone batteries when we didn't have electric for days. A gas grill is a must for cooking all of the food that ends up defrosting after the electric goes out. The satellite radio in my car was the BEST during/after the storm. Always had a signal and had accesss to all of the major news outlets and the weather channel. You can never have too many coolers or enough beer. If you have kids, a separate cooler for juice, lunchables, and snacks. Freeze juice boxes if you can. You can always store water in soda bottles (not long term), bathtubs, etc. I always cook up things like spaghetti w/ meat sauce, lots of chicken and canned goods during the early parts of the storm so there will be real food to eat. Eating chips and other junk lost its excitement after the first few hours of no electric. My husband was eating peas out of a can after only 4 hours. Store cook food in baggies for more room in the coolers.
Just some quick ideas. I have also learned that I won't stay in my own home for any storm over a Cat 3. Cat 1-2 and Andrew were enough for me to check into a hotel somewhere else. Good luck!
