Yup, it's not the 1st strike that worries me, but the 2nd one (in this case). From one forecast site "GIVEN THE RAPID IMPROVEMENT IN THE INNER CORE STRUCTURE AND THE SHARP PRESSURE DROP...RAPID INTENSIFICATION SEEMS LIKELY FOR THE NEXT 12 HOURS OR SO. AFTERWARDS...STEADY INTENSIFICATION TO NEAR CATEGORY FOUR STRENGTH BY 72 HOURS APPEARS TO BE IN ORDER GIVEN THE VERY WARM GULF WATERS BENEATH THE HURRICANE AND THE VERTICAL SHEAR"

Well no damage here at home, but south of me about an hour or so they had lots of flooding and are without power. I too am more worried about it next strike as they are saying that it might be a cat 4 or 5

For anyone anywhere near New Orleans, it looks like it will be about as bad as it can get. This one is really gonna hurt. Please just pack up your Pilot and get out. This storm is going to kill a lot of people. Don't be one of them.

That said, they often attribute deaths to storms, but they never attribute deaths to STUPIDITY!!

Katrina is Bad, Bad, Bad. This is the worse possible that could happen. I remember Andrew. I've seen pictures of Camile, a buddy of mine was a Red Cross photographer then. I've seen the shrimp boats miles inland because of the storm surge.

This is almost as bad as it gets. Pray for our fellow citizens. Pray that Katrina will jog a little to the east. Donate to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army.

I agree - Everyone say a prayer for our friends down south.

We may need a relief effort like after the tsunami...

Happy to say that I made it out A-OKAY. My condo sustained a little water damage from the wind literally blowing water in but none worse for wear. I didn't even lose power. My thoughts and prayers go out to those in the Gulf.

Alexandra may just be one of the unlucky ones when it comes to power. The city I work in still has several areas where there is no power. Just a few posts ago I said there was no damage by me. Well that was true until I went to work which is by the beach. I live 30 minutes inland so I guess I didn't have it as bad. There was a lot of damage in the city I work in. At first everyone was upset with the power company, now for the most part everyone is just glad we didn't get hit with the Cat 5 hurricane that it had turned into. I wish everyone the best especially those in New Orleans and Alabama.

I heard from Alexandra and she's ok. She told me she lives about 2 miles from where the center of Katrina came ashore. She said that they didn't board up and that was a mistake. The lack of power and grocery stores not being open was the worse part. I think she got power back Saturday night, although several of her coworkers still don't.

The humidity where I live in north Florida is pretty bad this summer, the windows have condensation on the outside every morning. I can understand it when Alexandra says the tile floor in her house was wet from the humidity. She also said the wood floor in her parents house buckled!

We don't really appreciate air conditioning enough until you have to go without it for a while.

A big thanks to all those who were thinking about myself and FLPilot.

It seems so silly to complain about what happened here after seeing pictures like these:

http://p099.ezboard.com/fjjboardfrm1...ID=89087.topic

Things were very scary on Thursday late afternoon when the eyewall passed over. When it here, winds were only about 80-90 mph and the huge rains went south of us when the storm made a sudden shift south. We were very lucky in my area (Broward County) with regard to flooding but not so much with wind damage. As JDeanski mentioned, we did not board up as this was supposed to be a TS when it hit. Probably will do so next time if it is a strong Cat 1. It is the no power and no resources that places such a huge strain on everyone....There is still no meat or much dairy available in any of the grocery stores near my home....They are expecting to start getting shipments in today. I can't wait to eat a real meal! Everyone is fine though, although nerves are very frazzeled. It is difficult to focus on work with everything going on. I feel so sorry for the people in LA and MS. It is a complete disaster. Worse than Andrew in terms of devistation.

Hello all. I'm from northeast Louisiana and well out of Katrina's impact, but as you have seen, some folks in the southern part of our state, Mississippi, and parts of Alabama experienced significant damage and loss. All the photos coming out of the affected areas pretty much sum up the horrific results of Katrina. The reported levee breach really made the flooding situation all the more dire. My wife just called me that their hospital was under an "lockdown mode" to take in patients from New Orleans-area hospitals threatened by the floods.

OT: Our location has traditionally been designated as a hurricane evacuation location, hence we had quite a few guests in the area this past few days. On my drive to work this morning, I was following a caravan of evacuees, and judging by their speed, apparently in a hurry to get back to New Orleans or thereabouts. The lead vehicle was pulled over as they were passing through my favorite speed trap (described in this thread:tough to judge speed). I hope the deputy cuts them some lack: getting a $200 dollar speeding fine just about translates to adding insult to injury.
