Came across this while browsing through this website. I'm not sure if this was posted before, or may be it was a variant thereof. Enjoy! Incidentally, there are quite a few other time wasters on that page and on the entire site, actually.

let the digits of the number be x and y. (5 and 4)
So the number is actually 10x + y (50+4)

Now we subtract x and y from this : 10x + y - x - y = 9x

Therefore the number will always be a multiple of 9 and the multiples of 9 always have the same symbols in the table
