Default Drafting Puzzle

Hi guys,

Thought I'd break in this topic with a mind bending puzzle. This is an engineering drafting problem. 3D rendition in 2D. Lines which are invisible or inside a structure are dashed. Lines that are visible are solid. You have the front, side and top view. Here is an example:

In the example above, the top view has a dashed line to represent the angle underneath the structure. Now here is the mind bender. In your solution, keep in mind the dashes and solid lines. There are no errors in the two views presented. Find the top view. A verbal description will do.

Good luck!

I'm rather perplexed by the second set of images. The side view implies that the depression runs completely from the left and right (or vise versa). In other words, the length of the rectangular depression is as long as the bigger rectangle it is situated on.

However, looking exclusively at the image of the front structure, it implies that there is either a rectangular depression or a protrusion that is smaller than the face it is on.

For the Side View to be consistent with the Front View, it should just be a rectangle with three dashed lines representing the depression or for the Front View to be consistent with the Side View, it should have two thin retangles at the top and the bottom and a bigger rectangle in the middle.

What am I missing here? Obviously, my feeble brain isn't able to understanding something.

Here is one solution, and also one back at you.

Wink

Here's another one. It has several possible solutions.

You da man!!

Everyone thinks of a rectangle when trying to figure it out. Makes sense to deduce that from the "squarish" front and side views. Good going!

Lemme look at yours.

Gosh, I'm stomped. The only thing I can come up with (and I'm probably in error) is a perfect square (no other lines) representing two blocks stacked one behind the other. Sorry for the 3d rendition, it's not quite as pretty

Educate me!!!

Thumbs up

That's good r_hammel, that's a valid solution.
This is another. Slight variations of yours are also possible.
For instance, your diagonal could have just about any curvature.

Talking Nerds

That was the nerdiest thing that have seen on a car oriented board in a while. I love it.

While we're at it here are two more solutions. Many variations and combinations of what I've shown here will work.

Alright, what the heck do you do for a living? Architect? CAD artist? Nice renditions by the way

Thanks, I'm a mechanical design engineer. I use a CAD software called SolidWorks. If you take a look at some of the images in the gallery at solidworks.com/swdocs/solidIndustrysol, you'll quickly see that these simple drafting exercises were no great feat.
