Default You spoiled me. Honda Odyssey question

I was not impressed with my search at the Odyssey forum probably because the quality here is higher . My friend bought the van and is looking at adding a DVD player. I assume that some Pilot owners have or had the Odyssey. If so, what is the best DVD player to add? My buddy will not be able to do it himself. Please share a thread that provides a good summary. Thanks.

Need more info:

Year and model Odyssey?
What is currently installed? Stock system?
What is his budget?
What is his preference? Ceiling-mount, headrest screens?

IMO, I find the Odyclub forum useful and I remember seeing a number of threads that covered simple upgrades to full-replacement ones.

I agree with the Ody board assessment..

I opted not to get the RES package. They wouldn't budge at all on the additional cost over a non-RES, and I figured for that amount of money, I could get 2 iPod Nanos and a portable DVD player to put on the console and have money left for discs and even some games.

Portable is definitely the way to go. One of the mom's at Tiny Sports (for the 2 year old) was telling me about their trip and the built-in DVD player broke, and her daughter doesn't do well for any length of time in the car without it. Over the weekend, they couldn't find a dealership that could fix it, so they went to Wal-fart and bought a portable.

I've only taken 2 decent length trips in the van, so we just put my laptop on the console and played videos on that. Decent size screen, not too loud, and no neck strain from looking at the ceiling all the time.

To further narrow it down, what area does he live in? This will determine if there is reputable local car audio shop to go to or if the big box chains will be the solution. For product choice I would look at an all-in-one overhead solution. These units interface to the factory radio in one of two ways: FM Modulation or a direct-connection into AUX input (adapter needed). The latter will give you better sound quality.

In terms of the budget - are we looking at $500/$600/$700. Just for reference most shops start around $150 and up for labor. Since he won't be doing the install, this will limit product choice. The big box chains (i.e. Best Buy, Circuit City) and specialty retailers do not install equipment you buy online - you'll be limited to what they have to offer. All-in-one overhead units (9" to 10" screen) will start in the $400 range and go up at the retail level. A lot of our members have saved by going the DIY route and buying products online from wholesale outlets or eBay.

Wheaton, IL. I would imagine that $700 would be tops. $500 may be better. I can always give 2 options. Thanks!
