Wife's 98 Ford Explorer 6cyl EB edition (89k mi).
I was driving it yesterday in city traffic. Pressed the accelerator to pass another vehicle. Heard and felt a clunking/rattling sound. Looked in the rear view mirror to see unknown parts rolling/bouncing on the roadway (no, I didn't run over anything). Battery instrument light comes on and power steering goes out. Managed to pull over safely. Look underneath car, nothing. Look in engine compartment, notice the belt (it only has one belt for everything) had come off. Further examination revealed the belt tensioner was completely missing. WTF! POS FORD! ![]() $280 to replace the tensioner and belt at the stealership (and they have the parts in stock, hmmmm). Plus they estimated another $3000 or so for other recommended repairs. ![]() Never again another POS Ford! ![]() Only good thing, even though the whole family was in the car, was that I was driving and not my wife on her highway commute... Did I say FRICKING POS FORD?

Glad your steering was good enough to pull over safely.
Maybe Ford should warn other drivers not to follow so close.

What surprises me is that many manufacturers, including Ford have ditched specific model names because of negative reputations earned, and yet, with the rollover lawsuits, faulty tire lawsuits, and early transmission failures, Ford continues to retain the Explorer nameplate.
