It looks like I may be in the market for a second car as my company may go away from company cars. Yesterday we drove an 03 Accord 4cyl, 03 Accord V6, and an 03 TL. As much as I wanted to like the Acura more, it was just too small inside. I liked all the bells and whistles, but didn't appreciate my head touching the roof!
I really loved the V6, and the reported MPG was 30 compared to 34 on the four cylinder. Do any V6 owners out there have any comments on the MPG vs the 4? Is 30 on the Hwy reasonable? Any other pros/cons of this model? thanks,

You might want to look into the forum driveaccord.net

Agreed on the www.driveaccord.net link - lots of good info there on MPG, reliability, etc. Personally, I've got an '05 Accord LX sedan automatic - has the 2.4L I4 and it's been a great motor so far. Has plenty of pickup and gets 28mpg for all-around driving, and I've had it up to 35mpg on the highway. The V6 is a bit smoother, but does suffer a loss of mpg, especially in stop and go driving. Go with the EX model (4 cyl or 6 cyl) to get the disc brakes in the rear, plus other creature-comfort goodies. The rear drums on my LX is my only complaint....

I had an '05 Accord that i put 32k miles on in about a year. The difference is night and day between the 6 and 4 cylinder models. It is a lightweight car and 240 hp is a great deal of power at the front wheels. It was very quick, while sacrificing very little mpg...perfect for passing cars on 2-lane roads, or merging into traffic. For me, it is not even a question.
I may be looking for another one in the near future....

In my experience, with the 4, the accelerator has to be pushed harder more often to get anywhere as opposed to the 6. The 4 constantly downshifts and revs high when ascending hills, accelerating gently, etc. The 6 has a great deal of torque and the high revs aren't needed, but the power is there if needed.
My point is that sure, you can get the 4 to save a few mpg, but most of the people I talk to agree that the 6 is worth not having your foot in it all the time. I guess it comes down to driver preference. Just drive both and go with what you feel you need. Both are very good engines, reliable and efficient. You won't make a bad choice with either. And no, I dont street race. |
