Default 2007 Camry Hybrid

Anybody else liking the new Camry Hybrid? They are claiming 38 to 40 mpg with decent power. (actual mpg likely 3 to 5 less). Looks like a pretty nice car to complement a Pilot, especially with gas maybe going to 4 or 5 bucks a gallon.

Pricewise, I like the Camry SE more. However, given that Honda may cut back on production of the Accord Hybrid given slow sales, prices on the Camry Hybrid may be more reasonable at the end of next year.

I drove by the Toyota dealership Sunday and checked out the new body style on the 07 Camry. I personally do not care for it. I think the Accord is much more attractive. As far as the Hybrid goes my 06 Accord EX 4 cylinder get 34 mpg on a trip. I am very happy with that. I am not sold on the whole hybrid thing. Just my opinion.

I actually don't like the new look of '07 Camry. Still like Accord better.

Just a note, You will not be able to turn off the VSC (aka VSA in Honda) on '07 Camry. They took out the option to turn it off.

I like the styling of the new Camry and the Avalon, even better than the Lexus GS, where they get their styling cues. But as ecsw will tell you, I have a Toyota bias.

Don't forget the RAV4 and Highlander before the Pilot.

I am starting to suspect that Jay is the spy from Toyota.

Yes Jay, what did lead you astray to a Pilot?

Long story. I had an '89 Tercel that was a great car and served me well over 4+ years and 170,000 miles. In '93 I got a wild hair to get a truck, and got a Ford Ranger SuperCab (still had the Tercel). The Ranger was nice, but the rear main seal failure (known problem by Ford) at 3000 miles and getting rear-ended twice in 11 days a year later were an issue, so I traded the Ranger for a Contour. Small, sporty, cramped car.

While this was occurring, my grandparents, who'd owned Fords for 40+ years, has yet one more problem with their '89 T-Bird (yet another known Ford problem, which Ford corrected in later model years by re-routing a hose) and got ZERO satisfaction from their dealer or Ford so they traded the POS on a '93 Honda Accord, and never looked back.

In mid '96 I drove my Mom's '95 Blazer, and liked it, and shortly thereafter violated my long-standing no GM rule, and bought a '96 Blazer. It was in the shop 22 times in 20 months for warranty work. I finally traded that POS for a '98 Accord, based on my grandparents experience and the inability of the local Toyota dealer to work a fair deal with me. Great car, served me well.

When the redesigned '01 Rav4s started appearing in late '00, I fell in love with the looks, longed for the utility of an SUV, and traded my Accord. Turns out that it was an underpowered POS, with rattles, creaks, bad brakes, etc., so 8 months later I traded it on a dealer demo '01 Highlander.

All the time I'd been following the development of the MDX, but just couldn't afford one. When the Pilot was released, I drove one, fell in love with it, and traded the Highlander for it. I obviously liked it a lot, but later decided to go upscale (and could afford it) and back to Toyota, and you know the stories from there, and my short folly with Lexus.

Later, the economic reality and maturity that comes with age set in, and I decided to look at the Box, based purely on functionality and price. And so far, the Box is a really nice match to my transportation needs. The Fit looks like it could have been a contender, and may be in the future if Toyota/Scion ends the xB's run.

Long answer to a short question. Sorry. Net-net, Toyota and Honda appeal to me with their styling, value, and reliability, and yes, I'll pay more in the short run to save more in the long run.

I don't see the economics of a hybrid and if not a hybrid, and not a Honda Accord, I would have to give a serious look to the Hyundai Sonata or Alerza.
