Default Treadmill purchase it so confusing out there.....

I'm getting close to finishing off a room above my garage which will allow me to move my exercise equipment away from the kids.

I'm looking at treadmills for the first time. These things go from a few hundred to a few thou in price. Naturally I've been spoilt by hotels having some nice gear, but really don't have a clue what to really look for.

Hoping some HP'ers will run me in the right direction with your guidance and experience.

Thanks

Look at spending about $800-1,000 dollars, for a good home unit. I had a ever-young, look for continual horsepower not maximum, floating deck (less stress and wear on your knees), and a wide deck 24 inches or more. I had my ever-young for about 6 years. My doctor said switch to an elliptical trainer, much harder work out and much better for your legs in the long run. Bought a precor efx 5.33, very nice machine but much more expensive than a treadmill, mine ran about $2,300 if I remember right. good luck.

Have you compared the costs and pros/cons of owning a treadmill (or other cardio machine) vs joining a club?

a few resources:

www.treadmilldoctor.com

http://www.treadmillreview.net/

http://find.runnersworld.com/vignett...archresult.jsp
(www.runnersworld.com search "treadmill")

To start, I would pick a price range, decide on what features are "must have", then look at individual brands/models and read reviews and compare specs...

I have a pretty decent treadmill. I would rather have an eliptical (sp?). I used one on the cruise ship and loved it WAY better than the treadmill.

The minimum, get one that accurately measures heart rate, continuously, not one of those cheap ones that you have to press a thumb on, ugh.

I've got a concept 2, tunturi bike (real old) and nordictrack. Have tried elipicals but felt they don't do enough for me and also I suspect you need a seriously high ceiling.

I have a very similar one. works well, quiet operation, and it doesn't take too much floor space.

If you live in or near a reasonably large metro area, try www.craigslist.org. There are often for sale postings for treadmills. You can find some decent bargains there for people who are tired of having one sit around unused (or perhaps belonged to their ex-wife).
