DSL Cable Modem Help - Honda Pilot

I'm finally looking into getting DSL Cable. I would'nt like to pay the leasing fee for the cable companies modem. They'll give me the installation kit for free.
Is there an excellent DSL Cable Modem that I should be looking at? What do I need to hook up a second computer?

Majority of DSL/Cable modem does its job well. To answer your second question, I need more info where the 2nd pc is located? You can go with wireless or hard wire using cat 5/6 w/ RJ45 connectors using a router. If your pc is next to each other, you can go w/ crossover cable. You need to have a nic card on both pc to do the connection.

I'm confused. Are youy referring to DSL, which means Digital Subscriber Line, offered by a telephone provider, or Cable Modem, offered by a cable TV company?

Who's the provider? What are your options? What's the purchase price of a modem? What's the rental fee of a modem? That'll help us help you decide what to do.

Sorry for any confusion. I'm subscribing to our cable companies high speed dsl service. They provide a modem for a monthly fee.

You mean high speed internet service, don't you. Phone companies offer DSL service using your phone line. Cable companies offer Cable modem service using your Cable TV coaxial cable. I'd recommend going to Best Buy or Circuit City and buying the modem, often offered with a big rebate, and saving the (usually) $5 a month cable modem rental fee.

Also if you have a computer show like what we have here in Southern CA., you can get a dsl/cable modem for about $50.00 + tax.

Anybody else with a cable modem paying monthly equipment fees?

When I hooked up with DSL, the modem, NIC card, and filters were supplied with the free install kit. (I suppose the cost of the equipment is hidden in the subscription anyway.)

The only benefit I can see about leasing the modem is that you should be able to have it replaced at anytime if if gets fried.

Pilot-Matt, you might want to look into buying a small router which is compatible with your modem. The advantage is that you can browse with either computer will the other computer is off.

Maybe I'm confused, or know too much because my Mom worked for the phone company and I've had both services, but a DSL modem and a Cable modem are two different things. A DSL modem allows you to use your existing phone line (with filters installed on those jacks that a phone is connected to) for high speed DSL internet service, while a Cable modem allows you to use you cable TV coaxial cable (with a splitter installed to send one side to your TV and the other side to the Cable modem) for high speed Cable internet service.

Which cable company, how much does a modem cost to buy it, and what's the difference in monthly price if you use your modem or their modem?

Adelphia Cable Company charges $4.00 per month. I've seen cable modems on BestBuy for $80-$90. If I lease it, at least when something happens to the unit it would be replaced by Adelphia Cable.

Between Circuit City and Best Buy competing in my area (NH), you can essentially get a cable modem free after rebates and occassionally "make money" with an additional gift card offer. This may vary by region of course. We have had our 3M Surfboard modem for two years without a glitch!
