Not a Java junkie, but I lifted this out of a google newsgroup search. Sounds like this exception is related to Java version as well as browser issues. What browser /OS are you running?

>I encountered a problem with Netscape 6.1 under Windows displaying a
>certain web page while I am okay with IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.7. Anyone
>can shed some light?

>java.lang.ClassFormatError: jcrypto/cipher/CipherException (Bad magic
>number)

in case you don't know what the error means, here you go: a java class
file should start with the hexadecimal sequence 0xCAFEBABE. this is
called the majic number, and if a classloader tries to load in a class
that doesn't start with this sequence, you get this exception.

i don't know why different browsers would fetch different data for a
class.

Do you recall installing anything (application, service pack, etc.) before running into this error?

Default Yes, I'm a Microsoft basher ...

... but that doesn't change the fact that you should use ANY browser except Internet Explorer.

I work for a relatively small .NET development company, and MS patches applied to our servers have caused more problems than I even want to think about.

So, each time the network guys run a patch, I have to run a batch of automated tests that runs through all of our web applications. This is to ensure that something that MS "fixes" or plugs does not break something.

Just a guess at this point, but one of those patches may have altered some code (possibly in the Java virtual machine) or simply altered a setting somewhere.

My laptop has too much security. I need an admin password to do just about any software updates/install.
