Default Basic DVD Burner Question

Help. Florida_guy or FLPilot (or anyone else), I know you have some experience with DVD Burners. I'm on the verge of buying an external one at Sam's for my PC. This is an 8X +-RW. My question is which media should I get for it, + or -? I really don't know the advantages or disadvantages of each format. Thanks for any info.

DVD-R will play in more DVD players than other ofrmats...not much difference besides that....just see if your other DVD players are compatible....The pilot will not play any RWs

Generally speaking, try to get a dual format burner, both + (plus) and - (dash).

+ media exhibits better archival qualities.
+ media has been ahead in the race for higher burning speeds.

- media tends to be supported by more DVD players and the Pilot RES will only play -R media.

If all of your home DVD players are fairly recent vintage, they probably support -R / -RW / +R / +RW.

Thanks to all for the info and the great links. I learned that my several years old Pioneer player will accept many of the formats.

It is not always what you read. I've got a toshiba that was not supposed to play xyz according to all of the reference sites. Wrong. It plays anything I've put in it so far. My advice, get a test disc of whatever you're trying to do and try it. Might be surprised.

I second that advice. Either buy a single or 5 disc pack first and try it out so you won't be out a lot of money. I was lucky enough to try someone else's disc to try my unit out first.

If you are looking to buy 8X "+R" media, try THIS one or THIS one. I am not sure what the difference is between the two medias (maybe someone else can answer that) except for the price. Newegg.com is always a good place to check for media, plus no tax or shipping charge.

You also have to experiment with the various programs out there, including various versions of the same program. I have a 2 year old Toshiba player that will play DVD+R disks burned using older versions of Nero ie. any version before 6.0. . If I burn a DVD+R using Nero 6 or higher the Toshiba will not play the disk. The same problem does not occur on the Toshiba with DVD-R. I also have a 3 year old Panasonic player that will not play DVD+R burned with early versions of Nero ie. before 6.0. Strangely enough it will play DVD+R burned with newer versions of Nero. According to Panasonic it is not supposed to play DVD+R at all. I also have a new Pioneer that will play DVD-R and DVD+R burned using any of the programs available. Bottom line, experiment with media and programs until you get what works for you.

To add to the advantages of +RW burners, check out SONY's latest dual burner:

"Sony Electronics is looking to heat up the DVD recording arena. The company is adding two DVD+R Double Layer (DL) DVD drives to its line of Dual RW burners. An internal DRU-700A drive and an external DRX-700UL drive represent the company's move into double-layer recording.

The new burners and accompanying compatible discs promise to almost double the storage capacity of recordable DVD discs. Users will be able to store four hours of MPEG-2 video or up to 8.5GB of multimedia data on a single disc."

The guy at Staples that helped me decide this very thing seemed to really know what he was talking about. He said the + formats were the older type and the - formats were the newer type. He recommended that I get the - type. However, if you have friends and relatives that you want to share with and they have older dvd players the - type might not play on them.

Actually the staples guy got it backwards. The dvd-r format was the first, and was loosly based off cd-r format. +R came later and improved upon the format. -r is compatible with almost any dvd-rom/player, the +R is compatible with most newer dvd-roms/players

I am guessing the -RW is 2X. If you exchanged it for +RW, you could probably get at least 2.4X. So, yes, I'd exchange them.

BTW, I am archiving my old VHS videos onto +RW.
