Click on Start, then Run.
In the open box type: cmd then press enter. At the ">" prompt type in: ipconfig then press enter. This will display your IP info. Have fun.... Merry Christmas!! |

Unless you're running Windows 95/98/Me, then it's
Start Run Type: winipcfg Click OK. If you have a modem installed, you'll need to change the drop down box at the top to your NIC. kad

hmm...I have XP and tried the ipconfig but that's not what I used before. I have a cable modem. I was able to find out all kinds of stuff typing in the series of letters I used before. Just can't remember them. Thanks though...any other ideas? I'm OK with comptuers, just can't find the dang thing.

"Start",
"Settings", "Control Panel", "Network Connections", "Internet Connection", "Properties". "Settings" and that will tell you.

Or, you can also find your IP by bringing up your network properties. On mine, it's brought up by Start->Settings->Network connections->[whatever your connection is named]. |

Do you have a router/hub/hardware firewall between the cable modem and your computer? (If not, you should.)
When you run the ipconfig command, is the ip address returned 192.168.1.100 (or anything starting with 192.168.X.XXX)? If so, that's an internal ip address assigned to your computer by the cable modem, not your public ip. Try this: Some cable modems are browser configurable. Click on this link (or copy and paste it into the URL of your browser). http://192.168.100.1/ If it works, great. You should be able to find the current public ip address of your modem. But it may change from time to time (e.g., every few months). If the browser asks you for a user name and password, it's a default. You'll need the owner's manual for the modem. If you don't have it, try the manufacturer's web site. Happy hacking and Happy Holidays.

Hey, thanks for all the help. Njay...that's the info I was looking for, but it was slightly different when I typed it in the run command; either way, everyone was of great help.
Thanks and Merry Christmas
