Question Question for you Photoshopers?

I need to do some editing of Photoshop .PSD files.

They are mostly graphics used on a web site design, Buttons, icons, headers ect.

Will Photoshop Elements do this or do I need the "Big" package?

About to go shopping, so a fast short answer will be great!

My mom uses Elements (she took a community class on it) and said that it does everything she needs for scanning, doctoring, and redistributing photos. She said that the full Photoshop is overkill unless you do a lot of serious photo editing.

I would say for web stuff, it should be fine. Here's the overview of it:

http://www.adobe.com/products/pselem.../overview.html

According to

Adobe's brochure (a pdf file), Elements is geared towards digital camera photography whereas Photoshop is geared towards everything.

The brochure specifically says:

"...and its integrated Web production application, Adobe ImageReady software."

Read the overview. It talks lots about 'photos', but I am looking for graphics drawing.

There used to be a punch of "Graphics" packages. I have Visio, but it does not open .psd files.
I could almost do what I want with MS Draw, MS Paint, and MS Photo Editor, if it were not for the file type.

I just wonder if PS Elements has all the drawing tools in addition to the Photo tools?

I just purchased Photoshop Elements, and don't know a lot about it yet, other than I wanted something on my Mac to take photos, circle certain areas and add text and arrows to illustrate what I'm saying in text. It has the tools to do that.

Elements does do some drawing stuff, but not like Photoshop - I use Photoshop more than any other program and I find Elements is a little to basic and I can't really "tweak" files like I want to.
What exactly are you trying to do and maybe I can help you some...
You can see some of my work here at http://dwellydesigns.com/home.htm

let me know if I can help you...

I an setting up a site using vBulletin and a portal or CMS (have not picked yet).

I want to edit or create some of the buttons and graphics so to make it a little more custom and less "standard vBulletin".

The files I am starting with are .psd

Default Why not...

Use a simple conversion program, to take the PSD files and save them as BMP's or whatever.

I use the freeware, IrfanView extensively. It can open PSD files and save them in any one of many formats.

Will look at that.

As long as it saves the various layers and not just the bitmap, I should be ok.

Thanks!

N-Jay - most programs that covert the .psd file to a bitmap with merge the layers. I think Elements will work just fine for what you are wanting to accomplish.

N_Jay Elements will have everything you need. I switch back and forth from Photoshop to Elements on a daily bases. I have a copy of Elements and work and PS as home. Yes Elements is more geared toward basic Photo editing but it works well as an image creator as well.

Elements has about 90% of the tools that Photoshop has. And if your looking at making buttons and such for the web you shouldn't need any thing that is only in PS. The only thing I wish Elements has is creating layer groups. It has layers but you can't group them.

I wasn't going to show this to anyone but here. This was made totally in Elements. It is going to be the background of my new website.

Test Screen

If you want to go freeware check out Gimp. I haven't used it myself but I have heard it is right up there with Photoshop in terms of power and is free.

Where did you find the best price? My search came up with $81.22 (less the $30 rebate).

TIA
