I recently moved from VHS VCRs to TiVo, and like it quite a bit. I went with standalone TiVos, a 40 hour and an 80 hour unit. I like the great improvement in video and audio quality, and ease of selecting shows to record. I didn't really consider DVD units, as they still seem somewhat expensive, and mandate the use of DVD media. What has you thinking DVD recorder versus digital video recorder?

Pioneer makes a dvd recorder with a built in Tivo (DVR-810H was the one I was looking at). It records to DVD-R and DVD-RW.

This is what I'm interested in as I tape 13-14 hours of shows per week (for viewing later) and I am often behind. So, when the 80 hours of Tivo runs out I can burn off some shows to RW for later viewing. $1000 is pretty steep, though.

I've seen it offered in the Northern Virginia area for $700 or so. I like having the two TiVos with Home Media Option, but then it's a logistics issue keeping track of what's on what TiVo.

Pioneer DVR-810H-S DVD Recorder/Player with Hard Disc Record and TiVoŽ:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...912926,00.html

I've been waiting for these to come down in price for a while. I wouild like to be able to record without going through a computer & burner and to transfer our nondigital movies directly to DVD. If I have to wait to do something on the computer it will never get done (eg, unread emails).

I've especially been waiting for the integration of a PVR like TiVo for the ease of programming that it should offer (never really mastered our VCR).

With respect to the ease of programming part, I wonder what the difference is between the basic TiVo that is integrated into these units and the full-fledged subscription TiVo that can be added?

IIRC, something like being able to program individual recording sessions but not weekly or daily??? Is that right? Anything else? How much does full TiVo cost?

Excellent question. I'm still trying to figure it out. I know that the Toshiba DVD player/TiVo combo unit includes a "basic" subscription, but you can upgrade and do the Home Media Option with it, but I have no idea in this case what basic means.

I was thinking about that, too, since on a couple of days I have concurrent shows (I have 2 vcrs currently).

Thanks, that explains it. I definitely use the Search by Title and Season Pass, and like the Home Media Option, allowing me to schedule shows from the web, and view my photos from my computer on the TV (and listen to my iTunes library on the home theater system) through the TiVo.

But what it doesn't mention is that the Home Media Option is a one time charge $99 (per TiVo unit). You also need a series 2 DVR to make full use of the Internet connectivity features.
Quote:
Currently, Home Media Option is available on TiVo and Sony branded Series2 DVRs and the Toshiba Digital Media Server. It is not available on the DIRECTV DVR(R).

Thanks!

All I could find was that it's $99 - they didn't say "one-time" or "per unit" (at least that I could find).

HMO on the second TiVo is discounted to $59, and they were recently running a special on the first unit, and yes, it's Series 2 units to get the connectivity.

ramirami, check out http://www.dvdrhelp.com. I'm pretty sure you can find alot of useful info on there. I used to visit svcdhelp.com, but now, it just resolves to the above site anyway.
