Default Spam filter

So what spam filter do you use? I am using Cloudmark's Spamnet. I started using them when they were free. I think they now charge $1.99 a month, but it is probably better than what I am using since they have upgraded the program. I use Outlook and as my mail comes in, it automatically gets filtered by the Spamnet. As it gets filtered, it goes directly into my trash folder so I never see it. I would say that it is 90%-95% successful. Sometimes it doesn't catch spam, but you can teach it to block that email the next time it comes in again. Although due to the fact that spammers use different email addresses sometimes they still get through. I am very happy with my setup, but just thought I would see what everyone else is using especially since Ziploc got caught off hand with the PayPaI (PayPal) email. I got that same email, but mine got filtered out.

I use "I Hate Spam" at work (Outlook) and feel it does a very good job overall. All my personal mail is with a yahoo account and I just have to put up with what slips through the "bulk" filter.

YMMV

I want to resurrect this small thread

Tired of Comcasts incompetent failure to filter spam....and want something else that will "arrest" spam before it gets to my email box.

At work we have posini which does the job...

The main problem with Comcast is that they sell your address to anybody & everybody. They attempted to keep them out of our neighborhood because of their business practices, but failed.

I think Comcast does an okay job screening Spam - in their web-based mail accounts. The problem is that they pass all that stuff through to your email client, which has to be set up to re-filter it away from your inbox. Once I figured that out and made some adjustments to the spam filtering on the Mac OS X email client, I'm a reasonably happy camper.

Now, spam that ends up in the "Screened Mail" folder in my web-based Comcast email gets passed to a "Junk Mail" folder, which I have set up to automatically empty when I close out of email. I never see the spam unless I look in that folder.

Comcast does a far poorer job than say Yahoo.

I just upgraded to office 2003, and yes I know the "next generation" office is about to come out, but would recommend the upgrade to 2003 simply because of the spam filter gets what comcast can't

Yahoo and Google seem to do a good job, and Comcast's is so-so, I'd agree. I made some changes to my email clients for my Comcast account - Mac OS X Mail, and I see much much less Comcast junk email than before.

And I wouldn't recommend any Microsoft mail, whether Outlook, Outlook Express, Exchange, Entourage, etc. etc., on my enemies.

I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird for my email client (I hate Lookout!). It does a reasonably good job filtering the spam into the "Junk" folder, but if you're like me and hate having the folders display they have unread messages, you've got to right click on the folder and empty it. Not a big deal, but it'd be nice if Thunderbird just dumped the folder automatically.

We have Cox and while they say that they filter the spam, it ain't happening. I get a ton of spam through my school address (which forwards to my regular account).

I've had Comcast, and now have RoadRunner through Time Warner, and soon will be going back to Comcast after the Relo. RoadRunner is much better with spam than Comcast was for us. I use two Gmail accounts in addition to our ISP accounts. I try to give out the gmail account I never check whenever I can online. The other Gmail account never gets spam and we use professionally. My ISP account stays clean, my Wife's does not. She'll give her email address anywhere online.

I also use PocoMail as our client for our ISP accounts. I think it's the most secure and does a really good job on spam. It's $39.95, but worth every penny.

Edit: I almost forgot.... another great feature I love in PocoMail is being able to see the mail on the server before downloading it and deleting it from the server if you want. Nice!!

On the junk mail controls configuration page, you can configure Thunderbird to automatically delete mail in the junk folder after a number of days. Try setting it to 1 day.

Call me crazy, but I prefer Outlook Express as an email client when compared to several others I have used (Outlook, Thunderbird, Groupwise). My Yahoo ISP does a better than average job of skimming off the spam grease before it ever gets to Outlook Express. Even poor old MSN Hotmail (used as a secondary address) does a reasonable job.

By the way, f you haven't tried Yahoo's free desktop search it does a great job and is virtually transparent once installed.

I had that set, but I went ahead and changed it to move the messages into my trash.
