Default Software advice to create DVDs/VCDs

Since the baby came we have been making a lot of videos and I decided to put them on VCDs.

So I went and bought a firewire card and installed it on my computer and now my edited videos (.avi)are ready to be burned to CDs.

I am looking for a software to convert the .avi to MPEG and burn the MPEG to VCD (or SVCD). Ofcourse if I search online I see lots and lots of such software....any experience with any of these software...specially something not too expensive...

Off the top of my head, tmpgenc is good.

I highly recommend checking out http://www.vcdhelp.com aka http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ (same site). Tons of info there.

Also, if you get into using Premiere, there's some free tutorials here - http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/videotutorial/index.htm

Default Hardware

I would suggest a hardware solution to convert AVI to MPEG2. This does not overload your CPU.

Look at this product : WinFast TV2000 XP from Leadtek

It is available here: Newegg.com

In addition, allows you to capture / view Live TV and hear FM Radio.

Last time I looked (last year), Nero was far from perfect in this arena (don't get me started on other arenas ). It does an OK job, but I rapidly found it to be deficient.
