Thumbs up Info for Comcast HSI Users

For those of you (me included) who use Comcast High Speed Internet, there was a recent post in the DSL Reports forum (from Oct 20th, I believe) that says Comcast will increase their download speed (double the download) from 1.5 mbps to 3.0 mbps!!! If it's true, then that's pretty nice...

Here is the link to the thread in DSL Reports...

...and here is the cut/paste from that link that shows the rollout dates:

Will it cost more for this upgrade, or will we get the increased speed for nothing?

guitarman: Same price that you're paying now for double the download speed, if I recall correctly... Of course, Comcast says that now, but until I get my first bill, then I'll believe it!!!

A cable company giving us something for nothing???? Unheard of. I'm not holding my breath. They are the only game in town, at least where I live, so what's in it for them to give me faster downloads? There must be a catch.

I hope your right. Perhaps they are trying to be ahead of the game as DSL and satellite internet service takes off.

Kemo, I had read the same thing in the local Gazette newspapers.

Sure sounds pretty good....and of course we're all looking forward to it.

But, while I haven't heard of imminent higher charges, I'm sure it's a matter of time before our bills increase to reflect the improved product and because the market will bear it..... biz as usual.

mine just cam back as 1.85 MBPS...

I have had cable HSI for 5 years....initially took "Media One" which was bought by "Excite athome"...excite athome went bankrupt and became "attbroadband". Now that has been sold to "comcast".

All this change in 5 years

I don't know how they're testing it as it is inaccurate. It gave me 2.5 when I know it's really 1.6 (I just tested it again by ftp'ing an 8MB file). I suppose I could test with a longer file, but the transfer rate had stabilized before it completed the transfer.

This is the speed that I've have had since Comcast took over from AT&T. I originally had @Home and then Excite@Home as well. Before AT&T picked up their share of @Home, I was getting 3Mbps. AT&T then capped it at 1.8 and then Comcast capped it at 1.6.

FYI, in theory, cable can get 30Mbps (don't ask me for a source - it's been a while since I read that).

Oh, yeah - download speed isn't always all there is to it. If you play online games (I'm thinking specifically of Battlefield 1942), upload speed is very important. A guy in our 'clan' has a 768 upload and he is often able to see all of us 128 & 256'ers before we can see him.

If they increase the d/l speed to 3Mbps w/o increasing the upload speed I don't think it will be all that great.

It's weird how I can get two different download speeds within a minute of each other using two different sites...

...the first one is from the CNET site and it gave me 1389 kbps:

And this second one is from the McAfee site with only 851.92 kbps:

Okay, this one is more in line with my first test using the CNET site -- it gave me 1554.3 kbps!!!

Makes you wonder which one to believe and why the discrepancy...
