Default HondaPilot.org's First Official Wireless Thread

OK, time to separate the geeks from the dudes.

How many of you all can post wirelessly to hondapilot.org from inside your Pilot using a cell phone as a modem, like I'm doing right now (230 kbps)?

Do not post to this thread unless you are wireless (and preferably in your Honda Pilot far from home). WiFi doesn't count. I'm looking for true mobility, the kind you would expect from true SUV owners, not home WiFi couch potatoes or Starbucks yuppies!

Well, I post via hardwire from the home office or WiFi from the kitchen on MrsWorm's lappy, or sometimes WiFi from mine when watching the tube.

I *could* do it from the car via Verizon's data network (either via the phone's browser or using the phone as a modem attached to a 'puter), but don't. Used to have Ricochet for mobile (the original 28k then 128k) before they went bankrupt.

Does it count if I am using a wireless keyboard and mouse and WiFi to the home network?

Or should I send it as an SMS from my phone? I guess I could use packet at 440Mhz. Seems a waste to tie up precious spectrum when copper does such a nice job.

(I did wait till someone else broke the "WWAN only" rule before posting from my WLAN)

I guess that was a pretty unrealistic rule! Well, I'm home now, so I guess I too can break my own rule.

For you, Worm, it counts, but not for anyone else--of course why would anyone else be on MrsWorm's lappy anyway.

Now as for Verizon's data network, I just wish they had a decent 1x bluetooth phone. That's all I really want.

I Actually have the Sierra Aircard 555 for Verizon. Have had it close to a year. It works fairly well. I am not using it at the moment, but am posting thru 802.11g. I have actually posted in the past using the card though. We have the unlimited plan, so I am hooked up all day long. Avg speed it 100-200k using Venturi's accelerator.

I don't meet the requirements of this thread (i.e., I have 802.11b) for my laptops, but I am interested in people's experiences with the Blackberry.

ok you geeks. educate me. I've been out of the biz for about 3 years now and am completely behind the times (my new supporter - the pharmaceutical industry - does not require me to keep up on this stuff like my old job did). How the heck are you connecting through a cell phone at such high speeds? And please point me to where I can pick up such a setup for my laptop. Can I assume I won't be doing this through my Sprint phone?

Default Wireless access from Pilot

My hands free Car Phone kit accepts a modem connection. I have connected my laptop thru this (USB to serial converter connected to the car modem) and can log on to my ISP. Speed is slow 19.2 Kbps but it does work. Sprint charges additional for data calls unless you have a plan for data.

How much you paying for that unlimited plan? For the dude's out there, the Aircard plans are data only and don't inlcude a voice plan. Right, or am I just a dude?

Qbrozen, IIRC you're in New Jersey? Verizon seems to have the best coverage here in Jersey, but they do not have a bluetooth phone, so I would recommend the indignity of a data connectivity kit. First, make sure you have a 1x phone for Verizon's Express Network ($50). Faster speeds are coming, if not here already, but this is my budget solution. The data connectivity kit, which consists primarily of software and a cable to hook up your phone to your laptop or PDA, will be designed for the phone and should be available from the phone manufacturer or Verizon ($40). Then spend a little bit of time with Tech Support to download the newer versions of the software and make sure you have a 1x plan ($7 per month extra plus minutes so after 9pm and on weekends it's "free"). 230 kbps for $97, not bad, huh?

Hey, ask your friends in the pharmaceutical industry if they will support me too!

tim.s makes a good point, but the phone that I want to do it this way doesn't yet exist and might never exist. BTW, what phone are you using?
