Default Digital Camera Photo Posting On The Web

O.K. The batteries for my new digital camera are charging as I type. I bought an Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom - 4 Mega pixel with 10x zoom because the 10x zoom was important to me. These links will tell you more about my camera if you are interested. These sites were very helpful to me in comparing cameras and I highly recommend them.

Unfortunately my life if very busy right now and I'm just getting over a cold that has seriously hindered my productivity. Therefore, I'm going to have to restrain myself from playing with it too much but I want to get your opinions on some things.

I would like to be able to share my photos with my friends and relatives without them having to download huge email attachments. However, I am definitely paranoid about putting too much personal information on the web. I want to be able to control who sees what pictures.

My first thought is my own web site. I want to do this the easiest way that meets my privacy concerns.

Any and all suggestions and experiences are welcome. Thanks.

I have a small site that I built for just such purpose. It was all done via my isp's site and all done very quickly, so check your isp to see what they offer for site space and tools to make a quick site for photos. You could also try Webshots, it is a popular site online that is free for a certain amount of space and if you want more space you purchase more. It seems that a lot of people use it and like it.
I chose to use my isp for ease of use and it was free already, they give me 10mb which is plenty of space for me. I would suggest that you scale your pictures down so that it is easier to see them for people that don't have broadband connections. I normally scale my pictures to 640x480 which is a perfect size for e-mailing and posting on the web and they end up being only 200kb in size or less!

Hope that any of this helps!

Matt

I did and I do have free 5 MB of space but I have no idea how to control who sees what pictures. They actually have a "search all sites feature". I want my site to be private to my relatives and friends.

SONY's ImageStation website is free, does not require a SONY camera, and allows you to password protect each photo album. It has better looking photo albums than I've seen on other sites and is generally the best I've seen though I'm no expert. They allow you to post unlimited number of pictures and albums and even allow you to post up to 15 minutes of digital video for free.

Hope that helps!

That sounds intriging. I'll do a search and see if I can find that site. Thanks for the tip.

I agree with robrecht. ImageStation is great for on-line photo albums. When you want your friends or family to see your pictures, you just mail them the link to the album. Your friends and family can simply download the pictures they want to keep or order prints and other items (photo mugs etc...) from ImageStation (which is how ImageStation makes its money).

Thanks. I feel better now knowing how they make their money. Otherwise it would be "What's the catch.".
