Default Computer help!!!

I need some help with something my computer is doing. Every time I go to my banks homepage and try to type anything on the main page an error box comes up that says:

Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library
Debug Assertion Failed!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE
File: dbgdel.cpp
Line: 47

EXPRESSION:_BLOCK_TYPE_IS_VALID{pHead->nBlockUse}

For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the visual C++ documentation on asserts.

I have no idea how to fix this or send you a copy of the box that pops up. It gives three options at the bottom of the box also IGNORE, RETRY and CANCEL and when I push anything it causes an error in Internet Explorer and shuts it down. Some other times it locks my computer up completely. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

and what version of Windows?

I'd recommend checking with the bank's web administrator to see if your version of Windows and IE are supported. Looks like a compatibility problem, though it could be some IE option you don't have enabled. Easy to upgrade the browser, more work if they tell you to upgrade to Win2000.

This appears to be a common problem for computers burdened by spyware.

Check out this thread I found from a Google News Search. I've used both spyware removal tools mentioned, and they work well.

WIN98, not sure what version of IE. I think it's 6 or 6.1. I've had several people tell me to re-install IE, but i'm not quite sure how to do that w/o screwing things up royally. I already have downloaded search & destroy and ran a check and the website is still giving me that error message.

Two thought I have are that banks usually require 128-bit encryption.

Do you have the highest level encryption pack?

I have also read that the error can be related to Windows Scripting. The reocmmendation is you download the latest version.

Try going to windowsupdate.com and see if any of your MS system resources are out of date.

Default seen something like this before ...

but can't put my finger to it. You can try to disable script debugging in IE. Under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab

Under Browsing:

Check "Disable script debugging"
Uncheck "Display a notification about every script error"

Microsoft either has discontinued or about to discontinue support for Win98 ... i.e. Windows Update for Win98 has come to an end or about to. Although there's no rush to do it, consider upgrade to Win XP if you're keepng the PC.

Default Cable Modems

My cable modem is acting strangely lately (lights constantly flickering) so I was thinking about replacing it. Is there much difference in the quality/speed of cable modems? Mine is an RCA. It was inexpensive, and I'm wondering if I can get increased performance from a different model. Thanks.

guitarman: I use Comcast Cable for my Internet access... Only up to 500, huh??? Is that consistent or does the rate get better, say, late at night???

You're definitely not getting the bandwidth throughput that Comcast advertises (1500 mbps) for their service...

At one of the speed test sites, I think dsl reports you can set up a history/profile and compare your results to others based on who the carrier is, type of access, time of day, zip code, etc. It's a good way to tell what you are/should be getting. There are also some tools at dsl for testing your pc to determine if it is network or pc issues, should there be an issue.
I get from 1.5 to 2.2 Mb down and 500k to 1.2Mb upstream. Bellsouth DSL. Kicks Comcast silly.

I just checked my wife's brand new laptop. She gets 1500 Mbps. So, could it just be that my computer is slower because of processing speed?
