Microsoft Security Essentials on my Windows machines. Avira prior to that (but the ads were annoying).

ya I agree avira ads are pretty annoying but its a free one nevertheless Its much better in updates compared to other av softwares I tried

my second AV was AVG - paid version, it was some $60 odd for 2yrs I think if I remember correctly, in 2002 r 2003 to be exact, not many knew about AVG it was pretty new then, later I tried Bit Defender it was good but very high consumption of resources

Still trying to figure out how my daughter got Skype to replace 90% of my desk top icon and logins. Click on my icon and it brings up a Skype window. Ran malwarebytes, Norton, and a registry cleaner. Nothing seems to work for now.

I did that too, but found that each major update disabled the hack.

I like MSE quite a bit. It's not intrusive, doesn't take a major performance hit, and just seems to quietly do it job without any fuss. And you can't beat the price (free). I'm still amazed that Microsoft was able to churn out such a nice AV suite *and* made it free. Guess that was a token gesture for years of disregard over security threats.

I was also a die-hard AVG user until version 8, when it became really bloated and ineffective. Switched over to Avira when Maximum PC gave it a top rating over the other free solutions out there.

Take a look at Avast! free avast! - Download Free Antivirus Software or Internet Security I'm impressed with it.
