A router usually has a switch built in as it gives you the ability to connect multiple devices with each other just like a stand alone switch. The difference is that a router will allow all those devices to share the internet connection as well.

So really for what you want - you want a router - a switch is good for going to a friends house and hooking your consoles together (or PC's) to play against each other. But for the net you need to have a router if you want the devices to connect to the internet.

You have made the assumption that the connection is not behind another router already providing the services needed for multiple connections.

It may not be wrong, but it is still a blind assumption.

Some "Routers" are smart enough not to compete with another router in the network, others are not and can cause problems.

Plug and Play networking devices have created a lot of "experts".

I'm a plug and play expert!!!!

Its been a month since we opened our own office of a Mortgage Broker.

All systems up and running extremely well with three computers and a printer for now.

Can highly recommend the Brother MFC 8480 and a copier/fax/scanning/laser B&W printer if anyone is looking for an all in one.

For $339 its a bargain.

With my regards, The MSDE (Multiple Service Distribution Enclosure) may indeed be where your various cables converge. But given the way networking works, it doesn't really matter where you patch your router. You could use the MSDE or any room that's convenient and patch a LAN port from the router into an outlet. As long those lines are connected by a switch/hub at the MSDE, the router should now be accessible in any other room serviced by the MSDE.
