Great. Just Great. FIL has a new router thats secured, and he has no idea of the codes except that they are clearly NOT the standard Cisco codes.
So I've been sponging off unsecured networks in the neighborhood when outside. Right now, I'm inside. My laptop is connected via blutooth to my cell which is providing the internet connection. Decent speed to. (ATT)

Can you not do the old paper clip in the router hole trick to reset it, and then come up with a new password???

If he goes with a new router, volunteer to set it up for him. That's what I did for my parents. I created a text document with all of the logins and passwords. Saved it on their computer and emailed it to me. That way, they have a copy in their email and I have a back up.
You could offer to reset the router and put the new password in his computer. If he doesn't know the password, how will he get his new computer(s) on the network?
