Default computer problem.

Ok guys I got this one, and see who can help me out.

Like two weeks ago when I went and turned on my Desktop computer,
it never came on the keyboard was not lit. and it never loaded.
so I took it to a computer shop and the guy said that the mother board is the problem and I got to get to get a new one.

But how do I know which mother board to get, is there a special serial number, size. And I am thinking getting it fro FRYS BTW.
And what is "CPU".

Is a windows vista hp. Thaks for your help.

What brand?
How old?
What type of processor?
How much hard drive?
How much memory?
Do you really trust the computer place you took it..

Does the fan run at all?

Almost every "no turn on" I see is the power supply. (usually just the power supply)

Bad power supplies can on occasion take out the motherboard or other parts.

CPU = central processing unit or processor

It seems like you have fairly new (vista) Hewlett Packard. I understand it is out of warranty. My IT guy at work always checks for recalls. Google it. Recalls are quite common in computer world so it is often covered by manufacturer.

I have an HP Media Center Pc and the model is M7640N. I have an AMD athlon64x2 5000+ with 4gigs of ram and The motherboard is an Asus A8M2N-LA with nvidia 6150Le. When I turn on the computer there is power but the monitor is on standby, keyboard isnt responding, harddrive dosent light or make any beeps. Also, the fan is really loud, usually when I turn it on the fan runs at highspeed, then a few seconds it goes back to normal speed.

Not much information.

How does the geek know it's the mother board? Did he offer to obtain a replacement / give you an estimate? (Sounds like he just made his best guess and left you to your own devices.)

First of all, when you try to turn it on, always make sure the monitor is on first. Every computer expects to see a powered monitor at bootup. Does the box do anything? Does it start "breathing"? Does the hard drive chunk away? Does the power light go on at all? Any beeps?

Even more likely than a bad power supply is a bad fan. Almost all new PCs sense the fan (electrically) on the mother board. Most will boot up without a fan and issue a fan fault error, but some may not boot at all. You don't want to run a computer very long without a fan. It would be bad.

Sounds like you're not initiated in computer diagnostics and repair. You have my sincerest sympathy. These things are infuriating. I wonder how most people manage.

Reset the CMOS as described in the document in the link, and then reboot the machine. It should at least beep. If it doesn't, maybe get the MB from Frys and try that as if it doesn't help you should be able to take the MB back. With no beep, other possiblilities are the PSU and the CPU.

motherboards used by PC manufacturers are typically microATX boards to keep the tower small. any microATX board that supports AMD AM2 socket processors should be fine.

it could also be that the CPU fried and the motherboard is fine. did the computer shop guy put in a known working CPU to test it?
