Default file recovery software

OK, no one laugh. (Like that will work)

What file recovery software have people found work best?

Not so much for deleted files, but more for corrupted disks.

Thanks in advance.

(Yes, I know most have free demos to see how they work, but I downloading and testing the 100's of programs out there would be a pain.)

I used R-Studio FAT to save hundreds of pics off a corrupt memory card. Now we don't have to go back to Alaska to re-take all those pictures. Oh..........Wait..............

So far "R-Studio" and "Active@ File Recovery" are in the lead from my testing, but with 500 GB drives, I am starting to think that recovery is worthless due to the amount of time it takes, making having the data backed up more important.

Luckily, nothing critical was on the drive, but I might have to re-rip a bunch of CDs and DVDs.

There are some CDs and DVDs I don't have access to right now since my daughter took them to school with her.

I think I have all my downloaded music on another drive.

I feel for you. Hard drive corruption really stinks! Good luck!

The one lucky thing is I opened the 17 month old/1 year warranty external drive and found a 21 month old, 3 year warranty drive inside.

Up to now, I have always preferred external drives made/branded by the drive company.

But now, I think an off-brand external may be the way I go, because almost all OEM drives have a 3 year warranty. (and most externals only have a one year).

Wooo Hooo, found this and it is FREE!

www.Recuva.com

It does the job without much fuss.

Seems to skip files with bad sectors. (What I wanted on first pass, because they slow it down to a craw and hang some programs)

I will try another one that tries to correct them later.

The absolute gold standard program out there for this sort of thing is SpinRite. (www.grc.com)

At $90 it's certainly not free, but I don't think there's anything else that does the low-level sector by sector repairing that this tool does. Basically, as long as the drive isn't physically damaged, there's a very good chance SpinRite can completely fix it. I know people have used it on iPod's too and it fixes them as well. (it's not just for data recovery, it actually repairs bad sectors)

SpinRite was an awesome tool for basic MFM and RLE encoding, but it'll have issues with the newer SATA supporting SMART technology.

Just curious, do you have any evidence to back this up? My understanding is that it supports SATA drives with SMART just fine.
