But he did have a HD and motherboard crash on his macbook 3 days before the warranty expired - so even the "good" stuff can go awry....

Sorry HP's off your list - good, reliable stuff!

I wish Compaq had been able to survive as a high-end laptop company rather than being sold to HP in the general commoditization of laptops. They had some very innovative designs on the drawing board with fully detachable keyboards that probably never got close to production, but still. I had their SLT-286 with the wired-detachable keyboard. Also loved their Concerto, that beautiful table-top laptop with pen-input and wired detachable keyboard. VGA monochrome, 486, but perfect ergonomics for a laptop, especially for those of us who like to work with our feet up on a desk. It's been said that I wrote my whole thesis typing in my sleep. I saw a couple of big SONY and/or HP table tops the other day and they reminded me of the Concerto but, of course, they're not meant to be portable like laptops.

So, Andy, anything in the works you can share?

You might want to find a store that has the netbooks in stock to try them out. Many people find the keyboards to be cramped.

The Dell Mini 9 has gotten good reviews. It's also pretty easy to load OS X onto the Mini 9 if you so desire.

Define "secure." It's the operating system and software that determine how secure a computer is.

I came across this online+++According to experts from Accenture, Gartner and the Daiwa Institute of Research, netbooks may be particularly vulnerable to crackers. Cutting costs on netbooks often means doing without optional proprietary applications like firewalls and anti-virus, that would otherwise slow down the processor.

No reason for you to not install a good anti-virus program and firewall on a netbook. The operating system even comes with a firewall.

Samsung NC10
Price: $500

What we like: Samsung already had us with the sleek design (a choice of three metallic colors and a chrome-y border on the sides), but the Windows-XP-enabled NC10's main claim to fame is its full-size keyboard that makes writing anything a typo-free dream.

What we don't: It's a bit bulkier than other netbooks but has no built-in mobile broadband modem, so you'll have to rely on Wi-Fi right out of the box. Also, we wish it would come in more colors to appease our fashion needs.

Bottom line: Sexy looking without compromising the ability to do actual work, the Samsung NC10 is the only netbook that is equally good for business and pleasure.

There are lots of extremely effective, FREE, anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewall programs available. Why pay for such software OEM installed when you can get it for free. They are also light programs that will not slow down the processor on netbooks.

Here (in Vancouver) you can get an HP 2133 netbook for $300 CDN (or about $240 USD). It comes with Linux, a keyboard/touchpad that is far better than the Acer and Asus, 2GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, WiFi, Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth, and a webcam.

This might be available in your locale, and if so, it's worth checking out.
