Login Password & Softwall Install Restriction

My wife and teenager share a Dell Latitude with XP installed. Mom wants a password installed to she can be the only one to access programs. As you can image she wants to restrict when our daughter goes on the computer. Can you guys point me in the right direction to set up a password to login and then to also restrict to me only who can install software programs on the computer? Is there anyway to block access to myspace or facebook when our daughters serfs the Internet via IE? Thank you for your time and cooperation.

You can setup login accounts with passwords. Administrator has all the access.

You can block myspace or facebook at the network router.

You using a Linksys router or something else?

I have setup two accounts, I need to figure now how to customize the limited account for screen resolution and getting icons on the desktop.

Our broadband connection is via cable through a Motorola SURFboard SBG900 wireless modem gateway. Do I need to log into this device and figure out how to store urls to block?

Each user can have their own icons on the desktop, and some icons are shared between all users. Same with folders. If you have WinXP Professional, you can set use disk quotas to limit how much disk space a user can take up.

For turning features on/off, from the start menu, run (Start -> Run)
type in either gpedit.msc or secpol.msc

GPEDIT.MSC
SECPOL.MSC

These give you a lot of options with regards to what features can be enabled/disabled on the machine.

In Help And Support, search for "security configuration tools", and you'll get a bunch of topics that might be useful.

You can have the sytem save logon and logoff times so that you can know when the machine was accessed.

You can set the logon time for a user some dialog (can't remember), but you can also set it from a console with the "net user" command. Example:
net user samantha /time:M-F,08:00-17:00

This would restrict the account samantha to the hours of 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
