Question I-Pod Movie Download Help!

I got an 80gig I-Pod for Christmas and I would like to copy my DVD's to my I-pod.
What do I need to do to accomplish this?
I-tunes does'nt seem to offer many movies especially the Monty Python movies and I hate to pay those prices since I already own a good collection of my favorites on DVD.
I've managed to load much of my music CD collection with no problem.

I'm no expert, but as I understand it, there's a couple of steps involved. First, you need some software (shareware/freeware??) to break the DVD copy protection and create a digital video stream, then you can use Quicktime Pro or other software to put it into iPod (mpeg4??) format.

FYI - ripping DVDs are illegal under the DMCA laws. It doesn't matter whether or not u own the dvd you're ripping, its still illegal.

Now that the legal stature is disclosed, there are tons of software available to help u "back up" your dvd, and then convert that "back up" into a format your iPod can play back.

Just google "ipod dvd rip" and click on the first couple of hits. Most of the software will offer a trial period that will allow u to do test runs. If you don't like how one program looks or runs, don't be afraid to try another.

oh - and keep in mind depending on the power of your computer, it may take several hours to back up a dvd and recompile the video into a format your ipod can use.

If you travel a lot, video on the iPod in an airplane might be okay. I bought the 5th season of 24 from the iTunes store, and preferred to watch it on my Mac. I enlarged the screen to make it more viewable; the resolution and sharpness suffered a bit, but I still found it better than watching on that small iPod screen.

Thanks for your input.

I did'nt know it was illegal to to rip a DVD, that I bought and had the rights to own and do what I want to with it, as long as I did'nt profit from any resale?

Thanks, I guess I should have looked down the forum page a little further. Saw the audio & electronics in the general area and went for it.

Here's your answer. It works perfectly.

My wife just saw me posting this and told me to get back to putting music on her Nano.

you need AnyDvd, to Rip and CloneDvd mobile to re-encode to the IPOD format.

there is no rip time, its just a couple of seconds and then about 15 min or so to re-encode to your format. Then just import from ITunes and your done. No question the simplest and most effective solution on the market. AnyDvd is a driver that just sits waiting for you to put in a DVD. so the only application to use is CloneDvd and its about 3 mouse clicks.

How much money do you guys want him to spend on software and hardware to do this when all of the needed software is available free? Use DVDfabdecrypter (freeware) to rip the main movie. Use Nero recode ( available free ) to encode the movie. AnyDVD and CloneDVD mobile are good programs but why pay for them when other programs that are just as good are available for free.

If he wants to pay some $ for software then just buy the full version of DVDFabdecrypter which has a built in MPEG 4 encoder and will rip and encode to mpeg 4 for Ipod playback all in one step.

cant agree on that one, NO one has a driver like AnyDVD that is real time, that is the price of admission and a very small one for the time you save. You can use Shrink or any other encoder though, I just like DVDClone as its simple and fast. the output is excellent as well. I use Nero 7 a lot but would not recommend recode to a newbie..

btw any of the slysoft stuff is free for a few weeks, download it and give them all a try.

DVDClone Mobile does them both and your cell etc. Slysoft has their year end bundle pricing. I think they do that once or twice a year and then thats it.
