Talking Core 2 Duo

Not that this has much to do with a Pilot but over the weekend I got my new computer with Core 2 Duo (6600) processor up and running and am really excited!

I guess, in a way, this is Pilot related because I use my computer for Itunes which I use to put songs on my Ipod and then interface with the Pilot's stereo to listed to the music.

Nice! What PC did you end up going with or was it one you built?

I went with a Dell XPS410. I have always had good luck with Dell and one just happened to come up on their Outlet site that had what I wanted. Well, actually 3 came up at separate times but within seconds they were gone. When I finally snagged one, it was at 56% of new!

AMD processors are very good. Until the Care 2 Duo (not to be confused with Core Duo) came out, the AMD chips were far superior to anything Intel was offering when you compared similarly priced processors. After having my C2D tower for a couple of weeks I highly recommend getting a C2D processor if money allows. The speed at which my PC operates is just amazing. I work for a software company with thousands of PCs and servers and nothing I have worked with can match my home computer.

I don't understand why Dell would suggest the AMD over the C2D. In addition to being faster, the C2D uses less power then the other processors. Just be carefull because the Dell Inspiron comes with a Core Duo which is not the Core 2 Duo. You can upgrade the the C2D though for as little as $44.

Vista will be out at the end of January for home users. That means I will be upgrading January 31st, 2008, when most of the bugs are worked out.

That 1GB is actually for RAM. For certain versions of Vista they recommend 2GB!

Interesting on RAM demands, since I'd been going on a ram upgrade mission with my PCs and can only think that MS windows updates as being the cause of the need 512k no longer seems enough.

I upgraded a laptop (Inspiron 6000) and a desktop (Pent D) this weekend to Vista Business and Ultimate -respectively.

I have the release through my MSDN subscription, over all an excellent OS, far better than XP or XP Pro.

The Lattitude only has 512 megs of RAM, but runs fine, albiet a little slower than with XP Pro, I just ordered another gig at Newegg.com The install requires 15 gigs of HD space, but only takes up about about 2 when installed. I only have 1.25 gigs of RAM on my desktop and it runs Ultimate fine, with plenty of headroom, so not sure 2 gigs is really required, but I guess if you open up about 10 apps it might, or Photoshop etc. There is a really nice feature (ReadyBoost) I use on the laptop, I stuck in a 1 gig SD card and told it to use that space to help "boost" the OS, seems to make it peppier and boots faster.

Vista has a nice application that you can download to asses the issues that you might have, it prints out a very nicely detailed report to walk you through what to do before and after. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...r/default.mspx

Over all my installs were seamless... even the issues it reported on were resolved with drivers included with Vista (all in one PSC 1315 etc) . The installer will put on the version that your hardware can support so in my case, it put on Ultimate on the desktop and business on the laptop. I am also running Office 2007 and MS OneCare, I pushed them pretty hard this weekend and other than one error, for a legacy application, I am amazed at how stable Vista is and the user interface is awesome.
