Transferring software and files - Honda Pilot

Just got a new HP computer. Is there an easy way to transfer software applications and files from my old Sony computer to my new HP computer?

I think there is a transfer utility on the Microsoft web site.

However, you are are better to do a fresh installation of the software you use and then transfer the files either with an external drive or by networking the computers.

dont even go there

with the brilliance of the MS registry there is no good way to do that and not have it blue screen on you ultimately. NJay is right, just bite the bullet and install them back on from your original disks. Norton has a product called Ghost that is excellent for taking a complete snap of a drive and all its contents, you can then store the image on another drive and push it back on to that point in time if you get anything messed up.

Totally agree and respect the 2 good guys before me.

As you are not replacing a failure HD with a newer/bigger HD, but old software applications to new machine.

You are better off to re-install the applications to save you more time down the road.

Most transfer utility is mostly for same machine from old HD to new/bigger HD.

XP has a "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" under the Accessories -> System Tools menu. I haven't really used it but you might want to give it a try, especially if you use IE and Outlook Express.

It's easy.

Send me both computers and a copy of all your software.

I will transfer it all, verify every thing is running right on the new PC, and send it back to you.

I like the external drive idea because then you'll also have a backup of your data. Think what would happen if your hard drive crashed...would you lose data you really couldn't do without?

I guess you'll have a backup on your old Sony if you're keeping it, but you might want to keep your backup up to date.

hey I have the same situation coming up. I am going to send it to you!

I was hoping there was some quick way. But all it takes is one program not running right and there goes 12 hours of messing around. I am still running Windows 98 at work, because I don't want to install new stuff. The network backs up everything, so if the computer dies, I will have to work from home (XP Pro at home) where I can access everything.
