N_Jay,
This question is a tough one to answer as you give no indication where you will be traveling. I travel a lot internationally and have found no one service provider works everywhere. In airports, go hang out by (or in) the clubs. Many have free internet access and if you sit along their walls, you can often pick up the signal and use it. Other than that, I buy a per session pass each time I need to get service and there is none that is free. mtryb

I know there are no "complete" solutions.
We are looking at getting one or two accounts for our consultants to share. Right now I have a SBC account which is just about useless, and my boss has a T-Mobile which is not too bad. From the web site it looks like Boingo is not to bad, but was looking for some personal experience. Buying day by day is NOT an efficient way if you travel a lot.

I travel ALOT. Most times I can find a free (either meant to be free or someone did not lock down the connection) I will not connect if I can not get my VPN up as that is the only way I am certain of the security...

I guess T-Mobile has most starbucks. More and more I am finding less accidentally open hot spots.
