Default WIRELESS NETWORK FOR DUMMIES...HeLp?

I thought we were geeks, turns out we're just plain old nerds.

We're trying to set up a wireless network for our xbox 360.

Our wireless router is a Microsoft MN-500. It's asking us for info we don't know how to find...ISP & DNS...I though for sure we could find the ISP...

You guys are laughing at me.
Someone went on a shopping spree at the Microsoft Company store and he's dying to play with his new toys.

I decided I'd ask all my Smarty Pants Pilot Friends here for basic instructions on how to find these numbers. Thanks in advance for any alms you can hand me

on your PC do Run and type cmd.
It will open the cmd (DOS) window.

type: ipconfig

will show you all the IP configuration paramenters..

LOL...you gotta fight my 6 year old for it. I haven't even touched it yet. It's purty If I had tetris it might be a different story, I'd be addicted too (if I didn't have a million chores to do instead.)

Do you have a dynamic or static IP address with your ISP? If not static, then your ISP will change it at some point, so you should just click the automatic DHCP in the router setup if it's not static. If static, then just put in the info from ipconfig. Most residential services should be one or the other.

most ISPs charge extra for static....my guess would be that you have dynamic if you are not paying extra to wavebroadband

true, but most ISP were lazy to change the IP address on their customers unless they found something weird going on. I have the same IP address for more than a year and never got changed.

Xbox360...... hmmm..... me like. U have HDTV setup with it?
PS3 is also coming out very soon.

what is your computer plugged into now (before wireless router)? if it's a wired router, couldn't you just log into it and pull the info from there? or this is a completely brand new setup?

btw, you'll need to type "ipconfig /all" to get the dns servers.

we just have our computer plugged into a cable modem....We got the wireless router for free with no software, so I think this may be what's making this so difficult. It kept telling us to refer to "base station management tool" program.

Thanks for the " /all " hint. I'll check that out now, and send what i get to my husband at work. I know he's been racking his brain all night and can't wait to jump on this when he gets home.

Yeah, ecsw Hubby's been talking non stop about upgrading all of our electronics from the 90's stuff to match and maximize our xbox experience. LOL. I don't care so much. I want furniture.

unless I'm missing something, this seems like it should be fairly easy. most routers by default come preconfigured with dynamic. assuming you have a dynamic ip from your isp, you should be able to plug in your new router into the modem, and then your computer to the router, and after power cycling the modem and router, it should work.

What brand is the router? The mangement software should come up by typing in the preconfigured ip for the router in a web browser window. Depending on the router brand it would be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. you will be prompted for a username and password, it is usually admin/admin or admin/password. All the settings for you router configuration will be here.
