My neighbor is Mr. E-bay and is always finding stuff for a bargain. He found a 1-year old Apple Powerbook and wanted to know if I was interested in his 1-year old Apple I-book. He just bought one for his wife on e-bay for around $700 and would sell it to me for that. It has the airport card (it's even configured for my wireless router since I bought it from him, too). I looked at a new I-book last week for around $1000.
I'm kindova computer novice....I know how to get around and do the stuff I wanna, but not into the nuts and bolt (circuits and transistors?) of them like he is. I just bought a G5 PowerMac not long ago, and a laptop would be handy for surfing and e-mail in other areas of the house, as well as on trips back home for family business. Is it overkill to have both?

Overkill? no way. In my house, I have a work laptop for me, a work laptop for my wife, a desktop for my daughter, a laptop for the family (read: daughters laptop). Never can have too many computers. It is handy cuz it keeps the family together in the house while surfing/watching TV instead of separating into respective rooms to get online

Get rid of the desktop. Laptops are the only way to go for home use.

I have a laptop and desktop. I highly recommend it. With the laptop, you can log on from anywhere in the house, the yard, garage. It's a lot more convenient.

I don't see any problems with that setup. Seems to be a decent price (even though I'm not a fan of fruity computers
).What sort of applications do you need it for? If it's just for surfing the internet you need not worry about the performance of the computer. However, if you run high-power programs frequently that's something you must look into. My computer was configured for Microsoft FlightSim and worked great with it, but I can crash it in five minutes flat with my design programs. If they made a tablet laptop for designers I'd be all over it (current models don't have the required keys accessible when in tablet mode). |

OK, so it's not so unusual to have both. I used to have a laptop for work, and the old desktop was for surfin', etc. at home, plus some spreadsheet stuff for work.
I bought another desktop thinking I would need the "horsepower" for CAD programs, photos, and such when I go on my own here in a few years. The new laptop would be for surfing and e-mail, and some spreadsheet and letters for family business. I love my Mac ( some fruit company!). It just seems more intuitive than the other systems, to me. Plus I like the iTunes and iPhoto apps, and the dashboard is pretty cool, too.

I recently bought a laptop in addition to my desktop so I could be a little more mobile around the house.
But I like the laptop so much and it's so powerful, that from now on I think I'll just be buying laptops in the future.

Two disadvantages to a laptop: You'll pay more for it, and hard drives tend to go bad a lot faster, especially if you're moving it around much while it's running.
To us, the mobility is worth the extra cost, and we've learned to be a lot more gentle with it. Plus I make sure all important data is backed up to an external hard drive. You should do this with a desktop too, but with a laptop you're much more likely to need it. |

Given a choice, I'd take a desktop over a laptop any day. A regular mouse, full-size keyboard, and at least a 19" flat panel monitor just makes the overall experience more enjoyable. I have a wide-screen Sony VAIO laptop that's nice but it's a compromise by any measure. Laptops are much more likely to develop annoying little problems, and problems of any kind are always a bit more difficult to correct on a laptop. And worst of all, they're battery hogs.
Bottom line - a laptop is a huge compromise for the sake of mobility.
