Default Looking for a motherboard

I am looking for a decent motherboard. Just playing around with a pc, and trying to throw together a computer for the kids. Any recommendations on a decent inexpensive board and where perhaps to buy?

Asus and Abit boards are pretty good boards. I upgraded my computer about 2 years and boy was I nervous about this stuff, but it turned out OK though. One caution about Abit boards, the resistors have been known to leak after a period of mine. That's why I had to upgrade my motherboard.

Try looking for a motherboard with onboard/built-in audio and video (e.g., Intel Motherboards). Should not be anymore expensive than a bare-boards MB. In my case, my MB also has a built in LAN chip.

A couple of really important details.

If you buy a MB off of Ebay, make sure it includes the manual that documents the location of the connectors and jumpers.

You also want the original motherboard CD from the vendor with all of the drivers. In the case of my board (Intel D865GLC), Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 will not install a default driver for the network card or sound chip. If no CD is available, you will need to download the network card driver ahead of time.

That said, you choice of MB may depend on what you already have. For example, do you already have a case (if so, does it fix a micro-ATX board), CPU, and memory?

Enjoy. Try building the PC with your kids - it can be a fun and rewarding experience!

Try online retailer such as www.zipzoomfly.com or www.newegg.com . Asus and MSI are good motherboards. Are you planning to use AMD or Intel cpu? How are you planning to use the pc? Are you planning to just change the motherboard or upgrade other parts on the pc?

www.newegg.com and any of the MSI motherboards are great, I have about 4 now running very well. Their ability to keep all the BIOS and drives up to date with "Live Update" is very nice, just set and forget it.

I stopped going to the Frys down here (Burbank) when every time I thought I had something new it turned out to be opened! argh... after 3 times of that with motherboards and graphic cards among other electronics...I gave up on them. I started to use newegg and have been very happy since.

Try TigerDirect.com. They have some pretty low prices on barebones machines.

I've built/upgraded my own machines for years and have had good success with both Abit and Asus. But with the prices at TigerDirect (and I'm sure other similar sites) it's almost not worth doing it myself anymore.

What will be your max budget for the new set-up? What parts from the other pc are you planning to transfer?
BTW, how old are your kids?

What you said. I'm just appalled at the quality (or lack thereof) of all the name-brand box makers. I'll never deal with any of them ever again.
