Ok, back from vacation, boot up the PC, system does a poor boot not starting up Norton automatically, a reboot, Norton does it updates, run adaware and spybot to clean it up, everything now fine.
After a reboot, the keyboard is not being recognized. All I get is a polite beep. Try another keyboard, same thing. Caps and num lock lights function. Having passwords on the XP start up screen immediately stops me from using the system. Any idea what to do next and get it working properly again? |

What version of XP are you running? Home or Professional? If Pro, have you upgrade to service pack 2? Do you have the admin password? Can you bring the machine up in safe mode?
Is you mouse functioning? Are your mouse and keyboard using USB connections? If so, try another USB port. About 3 weeks ago I helped a friend with a Word doc and picked up a trojan in the process. At first I lost my desktop icons and taskbar. During the recovery process I lost some files and I couldn't even boot up in safe mode. I ended up installing a new hd and rebuilding the box from scratch. The old hd is now in the box and I have access to all my old files and drivers. I easily have 40 hours into the recovery attempt and the rebuild - major PITA. 2 good things came from this incident, I now have an external hd that I used to back everything up on a daily basis and the windows auto update feature is now working. In 2 years this is the second windows XP PRO reload for this machine. I never had OS problems with Win 95. My 8 year old win95 machine is still running strong on the OEM load, the kids have been using it for the past few years for games and word processing. |

Seriously, what should you do? Consider an Apple. They run OS X, Based on Unix are much more secure. Run Linux and if necessary Windows XP! I run MS Office and am fully compatible on most major programs. I was afraid to switch to Apple because I didn't know how to fix it and keep it running like I did with Windows. Fortunately, with OS X I have never needed to, it simply keeps on working.

I've had problems with Norton also. It has messed up 2 of my PC's. Both incidents happend right after Norton did it's updates.
I had to boot in safe mode and back out the registry to a previous date in the past and then do an uninstall of the product. Now I user the Firewall that's built into XP and the free antivirus form AOL. |
