Default Need phone line wiring help!

Moved into our new house this weekend (finally), but have a question about the phone line hookup. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post it in.

Ok, so the phone company hooked up the phone to the outside of the house on Friday, and then I had to take it from there (since I did my own low-voltage). I am using CAT5e throughout the entire house, so I ran a cable to the box through the exterior wall.

My question is: Of the 8 wires in a CAT5e cable, which 2 do I need to hook up in order to get the phone line to work? All of my jacks in the house are using the A-style order, so blue/bluestripe are in the #4 and #5 positions, respectively. I plugged the blue/bluestripe into the outside box, ran that cable inside, punched it down to a jack, and plugged the phone cord into that.... and no signal.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here... Has anyone else done their own phone line wiring over CAT5?

Line one should be the center two wires in jack. (6 wire or 4 wire)

Line 2 are the next two out side of those (Outer two in a four position jack).
If you are plugging your phones into an 8 wire jack, make sure you are getting it centered.

If you are using an 8 pin jack(RJ45), make sure the Blue wire is on pin #4 and the Blue/White wire is on #5 pin. Also, check the wire connection at the outside box. You probably need to interchange the wire. In the Ethernet cable pin-outs scheme, Pins # 4,5,7,& 8 are not used. They are use for telephone connection.

Got it figured out. I think I was punching down more wires than I needed. I put blue/bluestrip in positions 4 and 5, which matched what was wired up outside. Worked like a charm. It felt so good to hear that dial tone!

Feels good to have all this wiring work pay off. I bought a 9-line distribution board to push the phone signal throughout the house, so I was quickly able to get all of the necessary jacks up and running. 1 in the kitchen, 2 in the family room, 2 in the office, 1 in the laundry room, 1 in the garage. All hooked up in like 10 minutes.

DSL and satellite TV should get installed next week, and those should be just as easy to get anywhere!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I can always count on the trusty hp.org folks for great advice. Lots of smart people here...
