Default XP geek question

OK all you XP experts.

How do I get XP to stop popping up warnings and notifications over the system tray.

Anything I need a real warning about open a real window. These are just annoying.

Help!

What do you mean by notifications and warnings?

For help balloons:
Powertoys

Download tweakUI.exe. There is a setting that shuts off balloon help.

Security Center also warns you about automatic updates and anti-virus expirations:
Start-> Control Panel -> Security Center

Here's the procedure to fix your problem:

1. Click on Start and then on Run.
2. In the open box type regedit and then click OK.
3. Click on the plus (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
4. Click on the plus (+) next to Software.
5. Click on the plus (+) next to Microsoft.
6. Click on the plus (+) next to Windows.
7. Click on the plus (+) next to CurrentVersion.
8. Click on the plus (+) next to Explorer.
9. Click on the folder that says Advanced. This should give you a long list of items on the right window pane.
10. Click on Edit, select New, and choose DWORD Value.
11. Name the new DWORD Value EnableBalloonTips.
12. Double-click this new entry, set the value to 0.
13. Fill in the dot next to Hexadecimal.
14. Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer normally.
15. You have now disabled the balloon tips in the system tray or notification tray in XP.

BTW, before editing the registry, make sure to have a complete backup of your current registry.

Enjoy!

Where in TWEAKUI?

I'm looking but I'm not seeing. (could just be tired!)

Under the "taskbar and start menu" heading:
Uncheck "enable balloon tips"

but that is only for the help balloons that show up.

Or you can do what John802 listed if you are comfortable editing the registry (it's not a big deal as long as you back it up).

Is there any difference in teh results?

I have been using Tweak UI sinve win3.1.1 (I think), (maybe early 95), but never needed/looked for this seting.

To truly solve the problem follow follow these steps:

1. Pick up computer and place it in recycle bin. (always recycle old worthless stuff).

2. Call the Apple Store.

3. Order either a Powermac, powerbook, minimac, or iBook.

4. Sit back and enjoy countless hours of productivity. Quit worrying about how to fix it or keep it running.

Seriously, the Mac OS X is great! The new Tiger platform has a lot of the features that MS wanted to bring out in Longhorn 2003, Longhorn 2004, Longhorn 2005, Longhorn 2006, Longhorn whenever it ships. It does worry me that they have dropped a lot of features in Longhorn to get it out on the street now! It is way behind schedule and is taking on the appearance of Windows Me in that Me was a rush product and even the most die hard MS fans admit it was full of bugs.

I run MS Office with Word, Excel, Powerpoint (Don't use it, use Keynote instead) No compatibility issues whatsoever. For rare issues, I run Windows XP on my Powerbook.

My biggest problem now is keeping my wife's Dude It's a Dud going - constant problems.

Life with MS Windows and Dell =

Life with Apple =

There is no difference in the results between unchecking the box in tweakUI or doing what john802 listed. Essentially tweak UI does what John listed invisibly. I believe ballon tips "on" as default was new with XP.

No way. Been there, done that.

1) If I go MAC I have to go ALL MAC.
Price out 5 desktop and 2 laptop machines with all legal software for full business/engineering.

2) When you do have a problem, you just have to buy a new one (since the OS does such a good job keeping you out of the machine.

3) You don't like the way it works, "Get used to it", TweekUI (or anything like it is so non-MAC)

I figured there was way to turn off the balloon help, I just did not know where it was.

I have a slightly flaky UPS that is warning me about a bad connection (not really bad) ever few min. How would using a MAC help me.

Oh yeah, I would not have that problem because I would have to buy a new UPS to be compatible with the MAC.

Are you talking about this kind of stuff?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...002/bubble.jpg

If so, you just right click on the taskbar, click properties, and under Taskbar click "Customize". There you can change how things pop up.

You can hide specific icons, but I don't see where you can shut off balloon's there. TweakUI works.

I liked shellebelle's tip, even if it wasn't quite what N_Jay was looking for.

I have a Dell Dimension 4300 P4 1.6 since Dec 01. Upgraded memory twice, graphics cards twice, added another hard drive, added Sony DVD/RW, yanked the modem and added sound card, USB 2.0, fire wire. Every slot... space.... DIMM.... is stuffed full. I run the 20 gig HD near full and the 80 gig for mostly video editing.

It runs flawlessly, and has since day one. Had one day of downtime last yr when firewall was off and got tons of junk so just reinstalled XP. I would love a Mac for video editing only because the PC struggles to get it right.

I don't know what's wrong with your Dell Dude..... but mine runs awesome and I will buy another one!

You win the "Make Michelle Laugh on Friday Morning" contest!

I got my grandpa's old Dell which so far has been powerful enough for my needs (Adobe design products). Still, I don't think I'll buy another Dell.

If the sofware issues don't drive you crazy these awful Dell keyboards will!!!

PCs are standardized/

If you don't like the keyboard, just stop down at MicroCenter, Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, etc. and pick out one you like!
