Default MP3, WMA help

OK, what do people recommend for file type and encoding rate for portable players.

Seems most players can do either MP3 or WMA.

So what is best?????

Let the arguing begin.

P.S. If it matters it is for a Zen Miro 5 Gig player and Rio 128 meg player with a 512 card added.

sampling is really subjective, but I find that 128kb works great for my portables, and MP3 is pretty much a standard in a nice small package. I would not go much less than 128kb but experiment and see what you prefer. With 128kb/MP3 combo you would get about 1250 songs on your Zen

My subjective test a couple of years ago showed that, to my ears anyway, a WMA file at a 64k sampling rate sounded better than an mp3 at 128k. Now the hardware's so big, I don't worry about file sizes. I also don't do WMA, as Apple devices don't support it.

That's OK, I don't suport Apple devices!

Defalt for the Rio (Mine) SW is 128 kBs WMA.
I have not installed the Zen (daughters) SW yet, so I don't know where it defaults.

I prefer MP3 rather than WMA because I don't like the copyright limitations that Windows is incorporating into their protected WMA files. For example, if I update the ROM on my PocketPC, Windows Media Player for PPC believes that I am no longer authorized to play that piece of music and their software attempts to fix it by offering to connect to the Internet, except that the standard Windows browser on a PPC is not compatible with the JAVA script website that would supposedly identify me as the legitimate owner. If I copy the protected file from my computer onto my CF card, that still doesn't fix things. I have to delete the old file from my CF card and then let Windows Media Player on my PPC resync the protected copy on my PPC with the PPC version of Windows Media Player on my PPC. I went through 3 rounds of customer service before I found someone at MSN music who was knowledgeable enough to understand the problem and not suggest completely inane, time-wasting work-arounds. So much easier with the MP3 files that I bought from other vendors rather than the copy-protected WMA files I bought from MSN music.

Now I think it is also possible to use non-copyright protected WMA files, but I'm not sure it's always so easy to tell the difference so I'd just as soon stay away from BillGatesism in general as far as this is possible. Same problem came about with SONY when they try to sell useful hardware and also protect their content selling divisions. They ended up with proprietary software and proprietary formats that did not benefit the end user. I think this was why SONY ended up sueing themselves, where different parts of the company were both plaintiff and defendent.

In the end, it's better to learn how to play guitar, banjo, or mandolin, and make your own music!

Well, I am mostly just ripping tracks from CD's I own, so it is just a mater of selecting the format.
Guess I will start with WMA for the smaller files for now, and change if i get pissed at BG. (Me and Bill are buds!)

MPEG4 is the new kid on the block! It compresses both audio and video much better . It rivals closer to a uncompress cd in terms of audio w/ smaller file footprint. Check here for additional info about mpeg4.

Well MPEG is the group that standardises AV compressions systems.

MP3 is MPEG Layer 3 (Audio Compression)
I think it is from MPEG-1, but it may be from MPEG-2 (DVD).

Oh well, now you made me look it up myself.

Seems that WMA at 128 is good, and MP3 at 196 is about the same.
