Default New Critical Microsoft updates

Microsoft released 5 critical and 3 important updates today. If you're running Windows XP or 2000, it would be a good idea to run Windows update and get your system updated. Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger both have critical updates. Exchange 2000 and 2003 has a critical update as well (if you don't know what Exchange is, this update won't apply to you).

One of the critical updates is for Microsoft Word 2000 thru 2003. You'll need to go to http://office.microsoft.com to get that update. It's not available from Windows Update.

Given that the IE bug has a sample exploit available already, I would expect more exploits for these bugs to be available real soon now.

Ha ha. My automatic update started running as I opened this thread. Bill Gates lives inside my computer.

Well, only two that count!!! I'm not sure what's to come of the NX. No one rides it - just takes up space. Getting close to being a classic!!

On a related subject (to the original post, at least ), here is a warning I received earlier today from our computer center.

There is a new Trojan virus that is spreading through a link in a message that appears to be coming from Microsoft. The message contains a link to a website that is supposed to install a security update, but actually installs a Trojan virus instead. If you receive this message, please don’t click on the link and delete the message immediately. You can safely install security updates from the Microsoft website by clicking on the Windows Update link.

It is very easy to send an email message and make it look like it is coming from someone else. This is being widely used by viruses to trick you into opening an infected attachment or to click on a link to a website where personal information is being collected. We have seen email scams that appear to come from financial intuitions or vendors like eBay, PayPal, and various banks asking you to update credit card or bank account numbers or other sensitive information. If you have an account with a company, open a browser and go to their website manually to update your information. Don’t trust a link or attachment in an email message, no matter how credible the source appears. If you are not expecting an attachment, do not open the attachment until you have verified it's legitimacy from the sender.

He doensn't even have to take it from your wallet. Since he's already on your PC he can just log onto your bank account and transfer your cash from there.

Always good to know things, but that's not new. The phishers have been doing pop-up ads with your computer has a virus, or it doesn't have all the patches, or something to make you panic and click.

Welcome to the new world order. It's easier to get people to do things out of fear and ignorance. No work involved, gone are the days of worms, just send an email telling them they have won millions from a dead Nigeran King, all they have to do is help them illegally launder money.
