First laptop should be arriving in a few days. IBM T43 if anyone cares.
Now I'm looking to get advice on what makes a good case, and appreciate any recommendations for cases you care to share. I'm trending towards something with good padding, space for ac adapters/airline plugs, and a few business docs etc Thanks |

depends a lot on what type of image you want your laptop bag to convey...you could go with a backpack for a geeky/young image...could go with a nice leather briefcase bag for a executive image....could go witht he lightest bag you get...
aah endless possibilities...

I personally don't care for cases that open "clamshell" style, the way a hinged briefcase does, particularly when they use straps to hold the computer in the case. They are a real pain when going through airport security. My current case just has a slot-style compartment that the computer slides into. Zip open, zip closed. Nice snug fit.

I have a samsonite backpack this is similar to this one
I use if for my IBM T40 as well as my 15" powerbook (depending on work or play). It's well padded and contains a good number of side pockets for adaptors and other accessories. It also has a MP3 player pouch with an opening for your headphones. And I have to agree with you on the clamshell... I like the fact that I can just unzip the top and pull the laptop out when going through the TSA checkpoints when I travel. Picked it up at a Samsonite outlet store for like $50 (I dunno where that $150 MSRP came from)...

After a couple of years of having an over the shoulder laptop bag slip off my shoulder, especially in airports while lugging my other carry-on, I switched to a backpack style and love it. I got a Targus from Target, and then when I got a second laptop I came across a really inexpensive off brand ("Performance Gear") from WalMart that is just as serviceable, though not as well padded. My only concern is that the sewn-on straps may not last as long as a good over the shoulder bag, but I don't commute daily so it doesn't get too much wear. The backpacks seem to have more accessible pouches for cell phone, mp3 player, headphones, cables/adapters, business cards and badge, pens, etc, and reasonable backpack style room for papers and books.
The backpack also seems less obvious that you have a laptop inside. The drawback is that if you are wearing a suit and visiting a client, it may not look proper. But I gave up my briefcase for a backpack years before anyway. |

I just bought this Victorinox Web Pack 2.0 for my wife two weeks ago for her T40. She had a leather carry type which weighed a ton all loaded up. I almost got a Briggs & Riley (best warranty period), but this backpack sits lower and the design of the straps are unique and this was the most comfortable I tried. It has tons of space for everything she needs to take to work daily and cross country travel.
