Default Firefox 1.0.1 update

There is an update for Firefox 1.0.1 The web site says to be sure the Firefox folder is clean of previous installations before installing the new version.

I use Firefox and Explorer alternatively. I want to get my "non-duplicate" bookmarks out of Firefox and import them into Explorer favorites before I uninstall Firefox 1.0 both to save them from deletion and also to synchronize the two since Firefox will import the Explorer favorites upon installation.

When I try to import the Firefox bookmarks from Explorer I get "error importing bookmarks" I'm guessing but don't know that this is because the feature only works with Netscape.

Anyway I don't want to uninstall Firefox until I solve this issue because I don't want to lose my new bookmarks in Firefox.

Any ideas?

Just go to Bookmarks>manage bookmarks>file>export.

Thanks. That worked. However, I can't believe there isn't a feature that will check for duplicates and only import the new ones. Now I have a folder with a duplicate of all the bookmarks I had before I installed Firefox about 6 weeks ago and small number of new ones I added since while using Firefox.

When installing the new update of Firefox, just delete anything on the bookmarks of the new browser before importing the bookmarks file that you want/save.

Thanks for trying to help but that isn't practical because the new bookmarks are spread all over different folders and intermingled with the original IE ones. What I was hoping is that it would do a comparison and add the new ones to the old ones by checking if they already existed.

I just upgraded to 1.01 without having to uninstall version 1.0. I didn't see anything on the Mozilla page saying that I had to uninstall so I went for it. No problems so far.

I uninstalled the v1.0 based upon the following text:

All Systems

* Prior to installing Firefox 1.0.1, please ensure that the directory you've chosen to install into is clean and doesn't contain any previous Firefox installations.

These instructions were about half way down this page: firefox 1.0.1

Usually your bookmarks are kept separate from the installed software so uninstalling Firefox should not be a problem. I think the Firefox stuff is in My Documents -> Applications -> Mozilla -> Firefox. I don't have a winderz box with Firefox on it to check though. The Applications folder may be hidden.

It's installed under My Programs with the application files.

Interesting, I downloaded my copy from a different page, and didn't see an instruction like that. So I just tried the simple method and installed right over the old version. Did that earlier today and so far, no problems.

But if I do experience crashes, I'll know what to do now. So thanks for pointing this out.

FG, look around for an extension that will manage bookmarks in the way that you're looking for. Over at FF's site, you can find the extensions link and browse there.

It's funny that I'm reading this now. I just got out of the shower. While I was taking my shower I thought to myself. I bet there is a shareware program that will do what I want.

It hadn't occurred to me that Firefox may have done it. I'll check thanks.

What I usually do though is to make a copy of the bookmark file in some other tmp diretory and proceed with the installation, just in case.

Also, I use an extension called Bookmark Backup which backups your bookmark everytime you close your FF. I started doing this because this one day, the contents of my bookmark were just completely gone for some reason. The only things that were left were the default links for FF which is in the bookmark when you do a fresh install of FF. I have no idea what caused this and inquired about it over at mozilla's user forums and it seems that from time to time, others've experienced this, but nobody can explain what would've caused it.

The worst part was that there was no way of recovering the bookmark. So, the extension I'm using now ensures that should something happen again, at least I'll have a bookmark backed up from the last usage.

I just downloaded Firefox 1.0.1 for my Mac, and dropped it right into the same directory. It came up just fine with the few bookmarks I have still there.
