C-MOS Battery - Honda Pilot

Anybody have any experience changing the cmos battery on their motherboard! Do I need to back-up my bios settings? The time on my home pc is always off by a couple of minutes everytime I turn on the pc and I think the culprit is the battery on the motherboard.

HELP!

Unless it is losing its settings I would not suspect the battery.
Computer clocks are notoriously bad.

I would write down all the settings, but you probably don't need to as most newer computers work fine with teh defaults.

If you are running Windows XP, you can setup the system to use a NTP time server via the Date/Time
control panel. You can look here for info on finding a time server to use. I'd suggest using north-america.pool.ntp.org to start with.

If you're running some other release of Windows, you'll need ntp software, which you can get here

NTP will keep your clock synchronized to the reference clock. I don't know abou the Windows implementations, but the Unix software remembers how bad the local clock is and can keep adjusting it even if the reference clock goes away for a while.

PC clocks suck, and if being off a few minutes a day bothers you, you'll need something like NTP to keep it accurate. Changing the battery isn't too hard if you want to try that first, but I'd write down your BIOS settings just in case.

I changed the CMOS battery of my asus motherboard last night and reinstalled a copy of my hack bios. Changing the CMOS battery was very easy. Just remember to make a copy of your bios settings.

Sunday Rider - Everything is ok for now. I'm grateful to the members of this board and to some that put time to e-mail me the steps to take when changing the CMOS battery.

I may download/install the NTP software that iglesias recommend to keep my pc time sync w/ the internet server's time.

BTW, my asus m/b, model # P4C800 Deluxe is still under warranty. I just don't want to send the m/b for service just to replace the CMOS battery.

Betting it does not help.

Maybe your "hack" BIOS "IS" the problem!

I've been using the hack BIOS for my asus m/b for the past 6 months and only the past week that my pc time is off by a couple of minutes per 24hrs. Also I noticed that the original CMOS battery had some leakage. I had to clean the contacts and its surrounding before putting the new CMOS battery.
Now, I'm a happy camper!

I have the same mother board, I'll keep an eye on it. I've never had a cmos battery go bad, or even changed one. I have a P1 and P3 with original, but no time issues, yet.

I just received an e-mail from asus service center yesterday, informing me that they'll send me a replacement CMOS battery.
