Default Laptop speakers won't work

For all you computers guys out there, maybe you can help out a felllow Piloteer.

Basically I was doing some work in the living room with my laptop connected to my home stereo. During a break I was walking around my place and inadvertantly tripped over the cord connecting my laptop and my stereo. It ripped the cord out from the headphone jack on my laptop and nearly took the whole computer off my coffee table. Obviously, my headphone jack doesn't work to well anymore but, now, the laptop speakers don't even work now. I'm guessing that my laptop still thinks that something is still plugged into the headphone jack.

Does anyone have any suggestions on solving this problem or am I SOL.

TIA

sorry to hear, did you try rebooting the laptop?

Yeah, I tried that. Well, today I went to CompUSA and talked to a couple of the techs. They offered some thoughts on why it wasn't working, but basically, the most cost effective solution would be to get a pair of USB headphones or an external soundcard. I'll see how the external soundcard works.

The headphone jack in your laptop has a built-in switch that disables the internal speakers when a headphone is plugged in. The force of you tripping over the cable has obviously opened the switch permanently.

Typically the switch is just a springy strip making contact with another strip. Depending on how handy you are, you can open the laptop and try to straighten the strip or replace the whole headphone jack. Desoldering & Soldering will be required.

Thanks. I'll see if one of my more computer savvy buddies would be willing to do it for me.

Thanks again.
