Default What's your favorite brand of wireless router?

Just upgraded to a Linksys wireless G router (with "speadbooster"). Seems to be working fine so far.

..."yes" I did disable the SSID broadcast and I changed my ADMIN password...

I'm setting up a Linksys wireless print server later today and moving my wife's color laser printer to the other end of the house. I tried a D-Link wireless print server and it screwed up my Homeportal wireless router (hence the new Linksys router). Needless to say, the crappy D-Link print server went back to the store.

I considered Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link (because it was cheap) before going with Linksys. Please share your opionins on these and other brands (good and bad).

Apple Airport Extreme Base Station for me, but I'm partial to D-Link, as that's what I helped a friend set up in his house.

Apple also has the Airport Express for $129 or less. You can use it to push your iTunes music to your home stereo, and as a wireless print server as well. Very easy to set up, and even my Windows 2000 or XP machines play nicely with it.

I've been happy w/the Linksys wireless router (802.11b) that I've had for a few years. Not using any wireless print servers, though. Have a couple printers shared via USB on an XP machine and another color laser that is on the network but hardwired.

FWIW I've had poor luck w/range and longevity on the Linksys wireless cards. My fave card is Orinoco although a Netgear card (cheap) is working adequately. The range and signal quality is best on the Orinoco -- by far. Also have a USB wireless net adapter (Linksys) that's actually working pretty well on my daughter's computer. It's only been a week, though.

Amazing how many people don't change their SSID, broadcast it, and leave the admin pwd the same. I can get into *4* other networks from my living room. Unfortunately, none of them are sharing printers...because I wanted to send them a note, just for kicks.

I can only see 3 others, only one of which is password protected.

I'm partial to D-Link. I've set-up 3 system w/ D-Link as a gateway for my friends and it's very easy to do.

I like the Linksys routers, they are a subsidiary of Cisco so I figure they should have some trickle down knowledge from the big corporate branch.

I have set up three of them with zero problems, and I'm using a Linksys wireless card in our notebook.

My desktop pc has the built in Broadcom gigabit nic.

I was using an Orinoco Silver with my wireless router. The Orinoco really did good range. The antenna even broke the fall for my laptop once when it fell off the counter. The fall bent the Orinoco case a little, but it kept on working.

After I've run this Linksys card a little, I'll try to give a comparison.

As with many brands, they work better with their own kind. If I had a D-Link gateway before, it's doubt the set up for the D-Link print server would have fried my router. My Linksys card was simple to connect to the Linksys router, but the Orinoco gave me trouble.

That whole "...manually set you IP address to match the print server..." garbage shut me down for about two weeks. 2wire agreed to reflash the firmware in the router, but I didn't want to pay shipping both ways. It was a good router, but you can get 802.11b equipment so cheap these days...

I'm not trying to bash D-Link either, I just had a bad experience with their print server.

Just another plus for Linksys, but I can flash the firmware quite easily. in fact, they have a utility made to do it, so it's even easier than a download.

I looked for a model with an external "reset to factory" button (Linksys does, not sure about all the other brands). My old router didn't have a physical reset button and a firmware flash back at the factory is the only fix.

For any one looking for a cheap wireless router and card/adapter, CompUSA has a sale on NetGear for $5 after rebate. I've heard the NetGear is not the best brand around but for about $10, that's one Christmas gift off the list .

See this link

Back on topic, I've had a Linksys router and wireless card for over a year with no problems.

No way to vote. But I have a netgear and a Microsoft Wireless router. The Netgear is a true stateful packet inspection firewall, and has the extra logging options. It's the best i've owned next to my SonicWall.

I wanted to bump up this thread to find out about the new wireless routers out there. I was trying to figure out if I could take off the antenna of my Netgear WGT624 wireless firewall router and the damn antenna broke off. Can anyone recommend a good wireless firewall router with good range? Thanks!

I've got the WGT624 and it has been stable and has excellent range. It replaced a series of Linksys routers that were junk.
